    Just catching up on this thread so I realize this is a late reply. But when you consider Koufax went eight innings a start compared to seven for Drysdale and six-ish for Sutton and Osteen, I’d say Koufax ensured the bullpen was very well rested for his off days.

    That still didn't make him as valuable to his team as an everyday starter was on those other three days.

    A batter has four or five PAs a game. Good pitchers face over 25 batters per game on average.

    How does that change anything? Hitters are involved in the outcome of the game on a war daily basis, a pitcher is once every 5 games?

    A starter is a huge part of every fifth game. A batter is a small part of every game. It evens out.

    And in Koufax’s era, every fourth game.

    It doesn’t mattered how good they are, it’s one game. The best players in the game do more over 5 games to help their teams win.
