I’m on record saying I don’t expect Bama to go far. I’m still braced for a Round of 32 exit. But hot damn on the whole this team is so much fun. And Herbert Jones has a chance to go down as the most beloved basketball player in school history.

I've been looking up things like this. There aren't many.
As somebody else indicated, Missouri won the Big Eight in 1978 to improve to 14-15 entering the NCAAs. Texas won the Southwest Conference title in 1974 and stood 12-14 entering the NCAAs.
The best story belongs to Georgia in 2008.
Dawgs entered the SEC tourney with a losing overall record and won four games -- two of them in one day because a tornado damaged the Georgia Dome and messed with the whole schedule -- to claim the title.
