That's a terrible injury, one that often takes a year to overcome. If it were a broken ankle or a torn knee ligament, I'd say this is the year to have such things happen if they must happen. Not torn Achilles tendons, however.

Every time this thread is bumped up from mid-morning through about mid-afternoon I click with dread, assuming there’s another breakout.

The achilles injury guys always immediately look behind them, like "who kicked me?"

Wainwright tore his Achillies a few years ago, at the beginning of the season, and he wasn't right physically for more than a year. More like 16-18 months. It's a bad injury.

Buddy of mine was an All-American 3B who was drafted in the second round by a NL squad, but washed out with shoulder injuries after a couple of years. Anway, last year he was playing beer league softball at the age of 39 and rounded first, heard the pop ("everyone on the field at the same time screamed!") then collapsed to the ground in pain.

He went to the ER in his small town and was happy to hear he'd only suffered a major ankle sprain. They wrapped him up and off he went...and by off he went, I mean on vacation, where he proceeded to hobble around, including fishing trips out into the middle of a creek.

About 3 + weeks later he's still in pain and the damn thing is still bright purple so he goes back in for a follow up and they give him an MRI and, "ooops, we missed it. You've torn your Achilles, in fact, it's pretty much gone now..."

That was going on a year ago and he's still rehabbing. His leg looks like Frankenstein. Brutal.

I know it was time to retire Chief Wahoo and I'm quite shocked it lasted as long as it did, but I swear having that goofy, dumbass cartoon on the hats and jerseys made this movie even funnier. Like, the entire look of the uniform is silly.

Are Achilles tears a little easier to recover from than ruptures? I think there have been a couple of WWE guys who tore their Achilles that came back within a year, but they said if they'd ruptured it then it would have been much longer. Granted, different activity, different movements, etc.

Yeah. I imagine he won't be there for opening day next April, either. That's assuming we have an opening day on time in 2021.

Looks like Astros closer Roberto Osuna will require Tommy John surgery, though he is getting a second opinion.

I know this one won't go down as COVID-19 related, but I think it was a factor. The weird re-start from spring training to summer camp had to create some vulnerability. Osuna also tested positive for COVID and missed the start of summer camp and it seemed as if the Astros rushed him back, only to see him blow out his arm. It is just a theory.
