Funny, his grandfather ran things for 30 or 40 years and they worked just fine.

NASCAR is the classic American family business model (just like the newspaper I used to work for).
One generation gets a business off the ground and makes it a success.
The next generation makes it thriving and prosperous.
The third generation - which grew up entitled off the family's success and developed no real skills because they knew what their job would be - runs it into the ground.

    RIP Maurice Petty.
    I hate 2020.

With apologies to Smokey Yunick and Leonard Wood, probably the greatest chief mechanic in the history of NASCAR. Only Robert Yates might have been as good an engine builder. And Maurice was a decent driver, with 16 top-10 finishes in 26 career starts.

When Maurice, Richard and Dale Inman showed up at a track, the battle was usually going to be for second place behind the No. 43.

If not the important Petty, without a question the most overlooked. Yes, Lee and Richard did the driving, but Chief kept them on the track, and to read the stories Richard penned in his autobiography, was an innovator like many of his peers as NASCAR took shape. Overcame polio early in life.

    RIP, Chief.

I love this picture because it's so not NASCAR from the time.
