In a world where only two Americans were first team All-NBA, sending a team that's less than our full complement of talent (nobody would argue this one is that) is a recipe for losing. I don't blame any NBA players who declined to join, this season was a grind and a half after the bubble experience, but without the real top US stars (Durant the only one on the team who qualifies), this country is by no means the world's top basketball power.

And on top of that, most of the other countries have essentially the same roster year after year. We have a totally new team every competition and give them a week to warm up before the real games start. Some of them didn't even get that.

I mean, I have a theory why a certain segment of our countrymen love to shit on that team, but it is sorta banned in like 20 states or something.

Women's soccer is almost getting to that point, although people were gloating after the opening loss for different reasons

My middle school gym teacher called it 'babbington' and would get mad at you if you tried to correct her. She also had Tourette's, so she probably hates all of us.

When I read this article a while ago, I saw a guy who is generous and has interests way bigger than basketball. If I could have dinner with any four sports figures, Popovich would be on that list, and not just because he can pick the wine.

From the archives: Inside the exclusive team dinners that have built the Spurs' dynasty

I mean, he probably does come off as a curmudgeon some times but if you're a Air Force officer, probably a Sovietologist and managed to win multiple NBA titles in San Antonio of all places, you probably just don't suffer bullshitters.

The thing about USA Basketball is that other countries have gotten pretty damned good at it too. I mean, if anything we're victims of our own success.
