The number of injuries gymnasts typically sustain during their careers is incredible. Even if they retire after college, or before that, practically nobody gets out of that sport entirely physically sound.

I can’t imagine the pressure of having everything you have worked for for your whole career career be defined by one short event, especially gymnastics

The weird thing, to me, is that if this is all about pressure and such, this Olympics would seem to have less of it than others, relatively speaking. What with there being no fans/spectators, lighter crowds, and fewer, and less-close, interactions between everybody because of social distancing, probably including the media, that would likely make a difference.

It seems that things would be more low-key than usual. And, it's not like Biles hasn't already been in, and won in, any Olympics before, so this event wasn't her only shot, the be-all/end-all, competitively speaking, even if she is the greatest of all time according to herself and/or everybody else.

Olympic disappointment goes with the territory, that's what makes it the Olympics. We see a tiny slice of most of these sports. Dan and Dave, Mary Decker, Babilonia and Gardner. It's built-in drama.

That's what I think, and why it seems as if there must be something else to this besides, or in addition to, mental health issues.

It's been a pretty fucked up few years for U.S. gymnasts. I really can't fault any of them for something that might rear its ugly head at an inopportune time. They are the show ponies for an organization that made it alarmingly clear they don't give an iota of shit about them.
