Well, they might not want another Smart one.

How often does a Power 5 school can the football and basketball coach the same academic year anyway? Even if you are making Texa$ money, that’s a big ask from the donor pool.

Curious how $25 million, plus a pandemic, might actually have depleted Texas' war chest. Then I remember the Longhorn Network ...

Looks like Frank Martin is hanging by a thread at South Carolina. He made the Final Four but nothing to speak of since. I suspect the only reason he hasn't been sacked is the previously mentioned paying the buyout of two coaches in a Covid year. USC does not have UTs deep pockets.

He keeps dining out on that one Final Four run as a No. 7 seed. Since then he’s gone 17-16, 16-16, 18-13 and 6-14. One NCAA and one NIT over nine years in Columbia. Writers and announcers love him. Players are much more of a mixed bag.

I've got a Penders story. Back when he was coaching Houston and they were still in C-USA, they were playing at Bartow. I'd been given a friend's season tickets, which were three rows behind the visiting bench. Houston was out of time outs, just before the half. There was a disputed play, Penders jumped up and got in the ref's face in a bid to stall for time. The ref was about to T him up when Tom clutched his chest and fell back into the front row. Game stops, EMTs put him on a stretcher and rolled him out as the team huddled and the assistants called the play.

After halftime, Penders is on the bench like nothing happened just after giving every appearance of a heart attack. Given that UAB hospital was four or five blocks away, he might have gotten back before the game was over, but obviously he had gotten off the stretcher and headed to the locker room.

That's how Tom Penders came to be known as "Tumbledown Tom" in UAB fan circles.

Didn’t the ref T him up anyway?

Wild? He's been there how long with zero NCAA tournament wins? And tournament losses to Northern Iowa and Abilene Christian?

He was likely about to get thrown out on his ass.

Oates outperformed Hurley at UB, and has far outperformed him at their respective new jobs.

Yes, but he's from suburban Madison, so it can be spun as a 'homecoming' of sorts.
