This looked like a hit too ... till it wasn't and the Dodgers won.

Gerrit Cole, on the other hand, will probably remember last night fondly. Four days after Jeff Donaldson called him out for doctoring the baseball, Cole held Donaldson's Twins to two runs on five hits in six innings, striking out seven. He struck out Donaldson twice. Donaldson went 0-for-5 in the game. I guess the relief pitchers he faced put something on the ball, too.

To be clear, I do have a problem with pitchers cheating. I think it is a widespread issue, but I don't think it is the only reason offense is down so much this season. I say that because it has been going on forever. I think the issue is a combination of what pitchers are doing, hitters swinging for the fences too much, and possibly a deadened baseball. I'm just not a fan of what Donaldson did, calling out one player for something that even he admits is being done by many guys. It makes me wonder if there was something personal behind it.

I say this as someone who isn't a fan of either player. I would find it amusing if Cole suddenly reverting to above-average only a year into his massive contract with the Yankees and I don't really care much either way about Donaldson.

Josh Donaldson doesn't 'regret' calling out Gerrit Cole

The good news is that it wasn't Hayes.

If there's so much gunk on the ball, why doesn't it effect fielders' throws?

Maybe there was more to the story, but the Yankees kept Brett Gardner over this guy?

Gardner is hitting .211 and that is still 28 points higher than Tauchman

Gardner oozes New York, Bronx, Yankee.

He'll be Yankees manager not long after he retires.
