I would think it would be Romano, at least first up, he has closer-type stuff. You're right about Kirk, he can hit but he is a real bad body type, no idea how you could expect him to hold up as a catcher for any length of time. Those oblique injuries are kind of the baseball equivalent of the high ankle sprain: never believe the initial estimate of how long the player will be out. Ray's tumble might be the strangest injury the Jays have had since Glenallen Hill went sleepwalking.

There have been bad bodies at catcher (see below), but yeah, Kirk needs to get in shape to take full advantage of his talent.

Last year, six different Blue Jays recorded saves. The leader is now on the Marlins. Romano was third on the team and youngest of all who recorded a save. He's also having a dynamite spring. He has a great chance to run away with the job. But if he stumbles over the first couple of weeks, there's plenty of competition -- Rafael Dolis probably second in line.

Spanky is the one guy I thought of but BR lists him at 5'10, 180 (I suppose that weight is open for debate) while Kirk is 5'8, 265, that's way too heavy for that position, he's 20 pounds or so lighter than Aaron Judge who is almost a foot taller

Smoky Burgess is listed at 5-8, 185, the latter figure I assume was from his rookie year. But I don't think he ever got to 265.

I met LaValliere in person when he was with the Pirates. I'm not great at judging people's weight just by looking at them, but no way in hell he was only 180 pounds.

Overall, you are right. Kirk is going to need to drop the weight or he is going to have to be a DH/first baseman.

And first or DH will be a tough place to find a home in Toronto (who was the last MLB first baseman who was that short?) Vlad Jr and Tellez will play there while the other DHs.

I know, which is a big part of why Kirk needs to get in much better shape because those guys are both pretty young. They aren't going anywhere any time soon.

Kirk caught the Jays game against the Tigers the other night and as usual there was never a discouraging word heard from Buck Martinez: "Kirk calls a great game, pitchers love throwing to him, great baseball IQ, wise beyond his years blah blah blah" and while all that might be true he was also on the radio over the winter saying Kirk could never play a full major league season at that weight

5-8, 180? Was Trump’s doctor doing the weighing?

The Pirates tried to lock up rookie third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes long term, but he turned down their offer. I guess it is time to sell him off for a bucket of baseballs because he will be too expensive for them six years from now.

Wonder what lowball contract they offered.
