Good: The Whalercanes continue winning, especially at home.

Better: They have brought back the Storm Surge following wins, and are using them to honor front-line workers.

I think this is what Bill Clement thought the people wanted.

Congratulations @Elliotte Friedman , you truly are part of of the old boys network. The fact you don’t think Jim Bennigs press conference wasn’t worthy of talking about was a hell of a tell.

For our American friends, Jim Benning is the worst GM in North American sports, he makes Elgin Baylor look good.

Wow. I understand an underachieving GM or one tied to the train tracks by bad ownership, agendas and such, but the worst? I know Benning hasn't impressed, but the worst?

Elliotte, curious what will become of goaltending in Raleigh. There's a chance Petr Mrazek's long absence following the thumb injury and procedure gives him the best chance of a goalie they can ride during a potential postseason run assuming the team continues its stellar play. Thing is, they would love to send James Reimer's deal somewhere for a little cap relief (a worthy price to pay to dump Scott Darling's deal a couple of years back). A deal sounds good, though ... I don't see a Cam Ward circa 2005-06 on the current roster.

    A
well, the worst I guess is subjective but he’s up there. But he’s a hockey lifer so criticism won’t come form the rights holder and the media who protect their sources.

Benning is like many GMs in that he would be a strong AGM but he’s not a big picture exec.

Bergevin is similar. He gets lauded for winning trades, but his teams normally miss the playoffs. He’s not good at building an internal draft and development machine, and he can’t accurately identify needs.

Watched Caps-Sabres last night, and man, that Buffalo team is just thoroughly broken and defeated. They have zero life. I think you can start to look at the East standings with the caveat of "well, they still have six games with Buffalo left" as a predictor of future success. They'll be lucky to win five more games this year.

I have only watched Buffalo against the Rangers. First caveat is that the Rangers are a different team every night, with some young, inconsistent players and a coach who is shuffling lines too much. So it's hard to gauge them against anyone, because they will dominate a really good team one night and then look really bad against a bad team the next night.

But the Rangers played Buffalo twice early in the season, and they split the games. Buffalo hadn't given up yet and they were playing hard. They played again 2 weeks ago, and the effort from the Sabres was pathetic. Eichel looked like he wasn't trying. You look at the names on the back of Sabres jerseys, and you are thinking they should be a team building something good. Then you watch them play and the body language is miserable. Steve Valiquette (often annoying former goalie) does studio for the Rangers, and after the game he killed the Sabres. Exact quote: “I think the Buffalo players should be wearing ski masks on the 15th and 30th of every month, because there’s no way you can have that star power and then not have any pushback. I mean, they look like they’ve quit on their season.” . ... The 15th and 30th of the month are when players get paid. For once, Valiquette was right on.

Had the same thought. When Washington played them in the first couple of games of the year, the Sabres had a lot of pluck. But the Caps didn't even play particularly well last night and won 6-0 on the road, with no Wilson or Eller. Sprong and Sheary have been revelations. Really solid role guys.
