I’ll tell you this much, I don’t want to hear any more syrupy crap about the Auburn creed or Auburn family for a long time to come. But none of the AU people I know are happy about this. Even I feel bad personally hanging this around their necks.

Wasn't Freeze on the no-fly list with the SEC office after his exit from Ole Miss? He's clear of that only five years later?

Oh, I thought that was common knowledge. Yes, not his wisest move.

I read today that Liberty totally tanked Saturday, knowing their coach was fielding other offers. And Freeze just stood by himself on the sidelines all game, oblivious to it all or choosing to ignore it.

He's only 50, he has to do something, right? Maybe an AD someplace?

Somewhere back in a football thread I said AU and Freeze were a match made in heaven. Put him at a place with that kind of NIL money and he's going to recruit like a demon. He's back in the SEC and does not want to be exiled again, so maybe he can behave himself, or at least be smarter about his indulgences.

Speaking of which, anyone heard rumors about Dan Mullin and recreational pharmaceuticals? I saw that in response to his name in a coaching carousel thread. Never heard that, have y'all?

It's weird -- Shaw has been there a long time and I have almost no sense of the guy. I've probably heard him speak but I don't remember it.

He did a genuinely great job there for eight years. Leading Stanford to a number 3 finish in the polls is an incredible accomplishment.

I have no idea what the explanation is for the past four years, but the wheels sure came off.

His being hired argues for it.

Auburn hires Hugh Freeze as its next football coach, no matter the cost - Sports Illustrated

    Pat Forde

"The 53-year-old must prove he’s capable of breaking his teenage-level interest in everything that’s said about him and his impulsive replies to public criticism. The man who infamously tweeted how to contact the Ole Miss compliance office in refutation of alleged rule breaking in 2013 is the same one who weirdly sent a direct message to a former Liberty student who was part of a Title IX lawsuit against the school as an alleged victim of sexual assault. Freeze was not involved in the incident, but contacting the student in defense of athletic director Ian McCaw again called Freeze’s judgment into question.

Multiple sources say Freeze has agreed to relinquish control of his social media accounts when he becomes the Auburn coach. The background check on Freeze was extensive, and the school hired a P.R. consultant to handle the expected blowback in bringing him aboard. They are jumping through a lot of hoops for Freeze.

As one source with Auburn ties said Sunday, “If he’s contractually obligated to stay off social media and they had to hire an ‘Oh S---’ firm before he even started, is hiring him really a good idea?”
