Those are the assclowns who say, "we had a good draft, can't wait until we play you guys."

You sure? I like him but the receiver position is so deep you really want to pay 25 per for an oft injured receiver. You get a 1st and a 3rd and get
    To spend that money elsewhere.

Always figured the FA period is where teams address immediate needs, letting a player move on who isn't playing up to their contract number and finding a more affordable replacement, upgrading a position. The draft is where you look at who has a contract coming up at the end of the next season and want to have a replacement ready. Teams that get boxed in and needing a particular player or to fill a specific position in the draft usually end up paying dearly.

I know three straight posts is bad form, but.... running through the "best" or most successful QBs drafted by each team and I was struck by some teams inability to draft successful QBs. The Browns? Otto Graham 8o years ago? The Giants? Phil Simms? Oddly enough, with the Bills it may be Josh Allen since Kelly was initially drafted by the Colts before Kelly signed with the Houston Gamblers. The Rams? Probably Roman Gabriel. Broncos? Jay Cutler?

I don't know if he was the right selection, but the reactions to the Steelers taking Kenny Pickett last night were fun. Pickett just hid his face in his hands crying. Franco Harris's face absolutely lit up when Goodell showed him the card so he could announce it. Mike Tomlin looked like he was bouncing his way to the phone to call Pickett. I certainly hope he is right.

At the end of the day, he’s going to get a big, fat payday as a first rounder. That’s all I cared about for him. Everything else that happens from here is gravy. For what he did for Pitt football by coming back, winning the ACC, being a Heisman finalist and giving this program a much needed jolt, I don’t think you can put into words how valuable this was. Conversely, stating that extra year proved valuable to him as well. Everyone wins.

I didn’t want him to get taken by the Steelers because we know how brutal this fanbase can be when you underperform. But it’s clear from his reaction, which I got to see live last night while we were traveling, that HE really wanted to be a Steeler. It’s a great story and I hope it continues.

Mel Kiper Jr. doesn’t need me to defend him, so I won’t try to. But I will make some observations.

He missed big time on Chris Spielman, Andre Ware, Mike Williams (USC) and others (see this dated assessment). But he clearly had a better handle on Jeff George than the Colts did.

I take the “Make me your GM and I’ll win a Super Bowl” boast with a grain of salt. The track record of several teams, until maybe 10 to 15 years ago, though, shows me that Kiper had a much better sense of HOW to draft (if not WHOM to draft) than some teams. And Ernie Accorsi thought enough of him to offer him a job.

As Kiper used to say, he was the “31st team in the league” (when there were 30 teams). If Team X liked Player Y but – because of overall knowledge of other teams’ likely moves - could be confident that he would be available 10 spots below where Team X was drafting, there’s no sense in drafting him in Team X’s indigenous spot. If the Jets are the only team that thinks Jeff Lageman is worth a first-round pick, then get out of the first-round spot, add assets and get Lageman at a spot commensurate with how he is generally viewed. That type of approach seems pretty elementary, but it’s clear many teams were late to the party in thinking that way.

It’s partly Kiper’s own fault that what he offered 25 years ago – a nearly unique and nearly encyclopedic knowledge of players – has been severely democratized. Everybody wants to be an armchair draft expert nowadays. And anybody can watch footage of players and mentally note strengths and weaknesses. If I were a fan of a team, I’d want my scouting resources to be tilted toward what the average fanboi can’t find out from his phone – how is the player in the locker room? what do the trainers and support staff and ball boys think of him? how many teammates would let this guy date a younger sister?

Serious question ... with the recent push for more diverse voices in sports media, I got to wondering: Are there any mock drafts from females?
