Criteria: Any QB not named Jimmy G
Plan: Give up the farm for a project who has barely played
Expectation: Replace Jimmy G ASAP, with the project being competent in year two
Year One Results: The project looks like a project, so much so that he can't beat out the guy you're aching to replace
Year Two Results: When he plays, the project looks like a project then gets hurt, continuing his track record of barely playing
    Conclusion: Dump him

If Brock Purdy plays like almost any other third-string QB, Shanahan and Lynch are laughingstocks. Yeah, it's nice they got something for Lance and didn't dedicate more time and resources to a player that was not going to succeed there, but what a colossal fuck up.

The odds are a lot lower than one in three. Hell, I don't think the odds are that high for most quarterbacks taken in the first round and Lance hasn't shown much since then to indicate that he can be successful.

Agreed. They got insanely lucky with Purdy. Even they had no idea he could be what he showed last season.

If Purdy wasn't that good, or Darnold for that matter, if the Niners didn't have such high expectations - Lance would have played. The team didn't have the luxury of waiting on Lance to develop so they could justify the trade of picks.

And six of the eight picks after Lance are very good players if not home runs.

I would extend that to pick 12 and Micah Parsons.

Whatever the outcome of Lance’s career, I’m just happy that the 49ers went for it at some point. No guts, no glory. Unlike the careful SF Giants….

True, BIIRC he wasn’t in the convo for the third overall pick.
