Because in the mid-2020s, Rhett Lashlee is a better coach than Bill Belichick - especially on the college level. (Also, SMU has more money for NIL than every college in North Carolina combined.)

11-5 with Matt Cassel has to be up there

One thing I haven't seen mentioned is that UNC is about to begin work on a massive capital project - renovating/replacing the Dean Dome. That's a major, major fundraising campaign, and the Belichick hire buys them a minimum of two years of major media attention on football. That's really good for fundraising. If he actually turns the football program around, that's even better for UNC, but this could be more about keeping the UNC fan base engaged in the program so they can raise the money to kickstart the Dean Dome project.

True, but the ACC has a history of producing weird champs. Hell, Wake Forest has found its way into NY6 bowls in the past. There is no behemoth in the ACC like Alabama in the SEC or Ohio State in the B1G. Clemson isn't miles ahead of the field, nor is FSU. With the unbalanced schedules, there's an argument to be made that anyone* can win the ACC in a given year.

    *Except UVA.

With his trophy girl, BB is closer to relating to the HS recruits than we think. He’s dealing with that BS every day in his life already.

Wake made the Orange in ... the mid-2000s? ... that might as well be the single wing, leather helmet era as much as the landscape of CFB has changed thanks to NIL and the transfer portal.

You're not wrong. And Wake (and sadly, my school) are going to be left behind in this era. But UNC has big money donors who may come out of the woodwork with someone with Belichick's name recognition in front of the program. What's true today may not be true tomorrow.

I'm looking at the entire Belichick posse - him, Lombardi, McDaniels, Patricia, Judge, the son who we saw drooling on the sidelines..and don't see a bit of success in any of them unless they were attached to Brady.

I guess the 11-5 Matt Cassel season is the best success any of them have ever had. Whoop de Damn do.

See also: Fresno State in the '90s hiring Tark. Yeah, he had plenty of baggage, and it probably held up the Bulldogs getting out of the WAC for a few years to clean up some messes, but they did get a on-campus arena out of the deal.

The Hoodie Industrial Complex is out in full force today with all of the quotes from “sources close to Coach Belichick”.
