This is my concern, along with the impossibility that LeBron, et al, will allow themselves to be worked over like college kids. Have to think this is just a ploy by Hurley to get UConn to finally shit or get off the pot. (Though I like @Small Town Guy's conspiracy theories re: Shams vs. Woj)

I think the fact that Billy Donavan, who could have easily found an elite college job, stays in Chicago with a mediocre roster, says a lot about the travails of a college coach.

Comparisons to other college coaches who have made the jump, such as Donovan, Mike Montgomery, Tark, etc. are mostly meaningless in a NIL world.

This is the shit that makes ESPN in total, and this shitshow of a "personality" in particular, so insufferable to me.

The proliferation of NIL and paying players, and unlimited transfers, and seemingly unlimited eligibility for some college athletes? No big deal.

But 2 high-profile coaches leaving for greener pastures in the pros? "The very end of collegiate sports as we have always known them."

Not possible to let things be what they be. Everything has got to be some sort of nuclear proliferation and "The most/best/worst <whatever> of all time!"

Fuck ESPN and the society that buys into that shit every day.

I've noticed that in most news and sports "analysis" - the idea that the present situation will never change and how it will impact things seems t be the SOP. At least with the current NBA Finals we're not talking about anyone's "legacy" since nobody on either side has one yet.

So The Apocalypse would be when half of UConn's players go on the NIL free agent market after Hurley leaves?

I bet Calipari is stroking his new big boosters already.

Not only is Harbaugh and (maybe) Hurley leaving for the pros not an apocalypse, but I could argue they're only the third and fourth biggest college coaching moves this year after Saban retiring and Cal leaving KY. Maybe I'd be wrong, but I could make coherent arguments.

I hate you for making me watch that clip, but I did chuckle at the promo card at the end which encourages one to ask a smart speaker to play ESPN Radio. I would also argue that being the end of your speaker being "smart."

Cal is definitely last on however long this list goes. He was a lame duck at Kentucky barring a deep tourney run next year, and he doesn't do that anymore. Going to Arkansas was a surprise, but his exit was inevitable. If Hurley leaves (and my guess is he doesn't), I think he leapfrogs Saban for no. 1. Saban is 20 years older so retiring wasn't a complete shock. Hurley would be leaving a chance at the first three-peat since UCLA. (Harbaugh was telegraphing his desires months ahead of time so he's an easy no. 2 or no. 3)

Inevitable, but it's still a massive story when a Kentucky coach leaves. And like you said, to stay in the SEC was fairly wild.

Coaches got theirs, can’t handle having their once unlimited power restricted, so those who can bolt.

Bye. There will always be someone who thrives in any system. College basketball isn’t collapsing if Danny Hurley or anyone else leaves.

Apparently Rick Stansbury and the other assistant coaches at Memphis have resigned or been fired.
