I noticed that, too. Having seen countless Hogan matches after that, you realize that it was part of his routine. He often used heel tactics throughout his career, but was so over as a babyface that it worked with 1980s crowds as the heel getting a taste of their own medicine. Compared to Backlund, though, it was definitely something fresh.

I remember watching Backlund as a kid — I was 7 when he finally lost the belt; most of my memories are of him wrestling in the Spectrum in Philly and seeing it on the regional cable outlet Prism in that 1981-83 timeframe — but haven't gone back and seen every match. I was probably picking boogers when this angle was playing out. Thanks for the quick rundown on that angle.

Did Hogan and Sheik ever have a proper feud or a big rematch after Hogan won? Or did Hogan just run through the heel roster until he got to Piper and Orndorff leading into Wrestlemania?

Not really a “feud”, per se. Mostly just title rematches.

After a few months, Sheik got into the feud with Sgt. Slaughter, which was the America (Fuck yeah!) vs. evil Iran, which was capped off in the famous Boot Camp match at MSG.

I started watching in late ‘85, so a lot of finding out about the storylines comes from reading about them and watching the shows years later.

Nice little tribute to Raw on USA. Although conspicuous with its absence was anything focused on Vince. Only saw him in the background of Austin/Tyson and the Zamboni stunt. Also not much before the Attitude Era.

Rey & Penta vs. New Day next week?

I think Rey is still under contract with AEW because Tony extended it due to injury. Rey has been pretty vocal about that.

I’d think they could do a Jimmy Uso return next week, set up Usos vs. New Day at the Rumble, and have Drew interfere to cost Jey the match. Penta can come in and get involved with the LWO.

Yeah, this is going to get confusing. I have a feeling we’re going to be seeing a guy named Phoenix make his debut at some point.

The tag match challenge Mysterio accepted from New Day.

Yes, I realized I should've been clearer about how I was referring to Rey M. and not Rey F.

CM Punk says he loved where he worked and hated the guy in charge, who by the way love Seth.

I thought he meant Vince, but I’m seeing some posts thinking he meant Tony Kahn. Anybody else think either or?

Could've been either way without a little more context. Vince put a lot behind Seth with the Authority angle, while Tony is a self-professed nut when it comes to wrestling -- and it's pretty clear Punk has deep hatred for either man.

I also had to laugh when Punk said “did people say Steve Austin took his ball and went home?!”

ummm, yes, yes they did, on Raw and on Byte This

With AEW being in Asheville tonight, I can't see any way the Asheville boys lose the main event.

Also, since they're close to home, thinking that we get a surprise debut (You think you know her?) to neutralize Marina Shafir.

I can also see an end game that Copeland takes the belt off Moxley at the next PPV, leading to the ultimate dick move of Christian cashing in on Copeland.
