It's the idea that it was published in the Yearbook. Not that some dumb frat boy dressed up on Halloween. It was a decision made by who knows how many people.

It definitely surprised me as well.

  3. Yeah, it's 29 years ago, but still 1983 ... you would think things would change.

Don't know about Ole Miss, but our fraternity controlled the yearbook, among other things. All the paid positions we staffed by fraternity brothers. Essentially one guy and an adviser made the decisions.

As an Ole Miss alum, a lot of that was hard to watch — even if I knew the story already.

I was in school there when they got rid of the flags at games (flagsticks, actually) and was embarrassed by all the outrage.

Ole Miss, like the state of Mississippi, can be a complicated place to love. I thought the film demonstrated that pretty well and overall I thought Wright did a good job. But like others, I didn't really need to see the shots of him writing notes on the steps of the Lyceum or in the Grove.

I can't listen to Wright Thompson when he voices over a commercial. An hour documentary? No chance.

    He loves him some him.

Also, Dan Wetzel, on Twitter yesterday, and I paraphrase: "That Wright Thompson 30 for 30 was awesome, you guys!! Need some whiskey to process it all!"

Yeah. I'm sure grandpappy's whiskey would do the trick!!

    Puke.

I sat behind Thompson and Wetzel at the 2008 Alabama-LSU game, which was Saban's first trip back to Baton Rouge, so it was probably the most talked-about college football game of the year. It was also right before the election, so all they did was read political blogs the whole game.

That said, the copy they filed that day was no doubt 10 times better than anything I've ever written.

Were they sipping grandpappy's old whiskey while telling tales of how it used to be and how they wish it still could be? Those were the days!!

No doubt they're great writers, though.

So you're saying this whole romanticization of the South is kinda dumb?

Just as long as people keep using "y'all" on Twitter and everywhere else online to show just how prideful they are of their wholesome, good-natured, aw shucks Southernness. Cause that's awesome.

I use y'all on here and other places, but there are some parts of Southerness I could definitely do without. Most of them are things you can already guess.
