  1. Does Bob have a broadcasting career without Jimmy dying?

Wouldn't it just be easier at this point to list the coaches who didn't cheat back then? Lou Carnasecca, Rollie Massamino and John Wooden all looked like friend's of your grandfather. If you think they were squeaky clean, you're nuts.

Still amazed at the incongruity of 3-point rules around college basketball and just how close to the free throw line the ACC's arc was.

I was just thrilled my DVR recorded the entire Survive and Advance, that's pretty rare for me... Usually something starts 15 minutes late and then I have to track down the ending... I now have my DVR set up so it keeps recording for an hour after the 30 for 30 was supposed to end and twice, that hasn't been enough...

I just watched all but the last 10 minutes of the Allen Iverson one and the most of Nolan Richardson one... The Iverson one was really good. The Richardson one was a little strange to watch since I covered portions of it.

I only caught the last few minutes, so not sure what they all said. But N.C. State I remember was fouling when tied -- which was sort of crazy, although obviously not as much as it would be now because there was no shot clock. But I think there were at least 2 tourney games where with a minute to go, and the game tied, N.C. State fouled on purpose and it worked both times as the team missed. Definitely in the finals with Franklin. So maybe that's what they were talking about.

STG, they did foul tied... and addressed that.

But earlier in the show, V wanted them to foul while behind in the 83 ACC tourney... and the narrators (players) made it sound unheard of.

    I could be wrong.

The middle of the key area for the top of the arc was just silly. Mark Price, Whittenburg, there were so many good shooters in the league that year.

And it was weird that Whittenburg was hitting those same shots behind the three line in Albuquerque... but only getting credit for two.

I agree with your former editor (though I wouldn't take it as far as he did). Bob Huggins is regarded as a horrible cheater, as is Bruce Pearl. It wouldn't surprise me if they did nothing worse than Valvano did. But because of "Don't give up ... don't ever give up", Coach V is the patron saint of inspiration and all-around good guys.

I thought Personal Fouls was a great book, and I think back to that book every time they show Andy Kennedy at an Ole Miss game.

What's really amazing is that there are many coaches who have done far worse the Bob Huggins yet Huggins is almost unilaterally hated among the media and the others get a pass.

Huggins biggest crime is recruiting players who shouldn't be in college.

It was good, loved the reunion footage and such. Valvano was a stirring speaker.

But I also kept thinking about how dying can be an excellent career/image management move.

It was very good but not quite as good as The Two Escobars, June 17, 1994, or Pony Excess. It reminded me of Winning Time, which also went a long way toward deifying its subject.

Dying is definitely a good career move, but Valvano's image was already starting to rehabilitate pre-cancer with his ESPN appearances, which kind of made me wretch at the time.

Looking back, though, some of Valvano's wrongdoing seems almost quaint in view of the Bliss and Paterno stuff that's happened since.

Pete Golenbock wrote Personal Fouls, didn't he? I know he's come in for sourcing criticism at times.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it's just a web-only short film. Anyway, HBO did a really good doc on the 72 Olympic fiasco a few years back.

Enjoyed the Jimmy V doc. Whittenburg seems like a really engaging guy, and I could listen to Thurl Bailey talk all day --- just an incredible set of pipes on that guy.

Well, he did drive drunk - which is an actual crime. (And he got away with a lot more in Cincinnati off the court which never came to the public eye)
