Didn't they imply that the book has a lot of falsehoods? The NCAA guy said the only thing NC State was guilty of was having players sell tickets and such (lack of institutional control). Although they kind of skimmed over guys like Chris Washburn saying that Valvano thought he could change anybody.

Either way, it is pretty obvious how the members of the '83 team felt about the guy.

Just as soon as history is willing to rush out and get me re-write on that glorified jail warden Tom Osborne's career so that it reflects something other than the pious, holy roller "Dr. Tom" I'll be more than happy to help take a red pen to Valvano's. Last I checked Valvano's players weren't tossing women down staircases or having multiple cases of rape shoved under the rug.

    No doubt.

Valvano might have been two-faced and an attention whore during his coaching and media career, but when the chips were down, when faced with the ultimate adversity anyone can face, he went out with grace. Not only that, but he used his own adversity to help others.

I guess I'm a softie, but that's pretty amazing to me. God bless him.

I've got a friend who was an assistant at a mid-major for quite a few years, and is now a head coach. We've drank quite a few beers together, and off the record his take is that all DI programs cheat. It's just the level of cheating that varies.

I've told this story on here a few times, so forgive me.

I know a guy whose best friend took over a D1 program in Florida several years ago. He said his buddy was "on the fence" about whether he should start cheating or not.

After giving it some thought, he decided to go ahead and cheat.

What I liked about the NC State doc was that the V speech which opened most segments showed him to be inspirational, egotistic, charming and sleazy at the same time.

And I agree that it really humanized Coach K. The Dickie and Sonny V spots were OK, but the emotion didn't seem as genuine as with K.

There are a lot of coaches who have a very nice public image, but how things really were was dramatically different. I should know, seeing as how I follow Kentucky basketball and have since even before Eddie Sutton somehow didn't know his assistants were sending people money. Lord knows how many years ago that went down and it still pisses me off.

Denial isn't a river in Eqypt.

    Sutton knew.

The NCAA did not adopt the 3-point shot for all games until the 1986 season. Up until that time some conferences had it, some didn't, and the distance of the arc varied.

I watched the show the other day and really enjoyed it. Coach V certainly had his warts and let fame go to his head but the impact he made on the first players he had at State and the connection they had, is amazing. They loved him to the point they are moved to tears to even talk about him long after his death. Every athlete should have the experience of playing for a coach like that.

I totally agree, which is one of the reasons it still ticks me off to no end. I have very few buttons that you can push and piss me off immediately, but this is one of them.

Watching the 1983 draft show. Art Model is Jonas Salk compared to Robert Irsay.

So I guess your friend was saying he cheats, too. Right?
