remember a few years ago when one of the automakers ran commercials in which truck owners pulled over to the side of the road when they hit 100,000 miles and held up a sign saying '100,000'? those were stupid.

    True story.

Back in the summer of 1992, I owned a perfect pair of white hi-top Chuck Taylors. I'd had them about two years. Then I wore them to Lollapalooza, entered the pit when Pearl Jam took the stage, and prompty lost both of them. I was crushed, and I went and cried on my blanket for a while.

A couple of bands later, I go back down for Soundgarden, barefoot. As you might imagine, I was committing big toe suicide, but my grief made me do it.

Couple of songs in, I step on something that feels weird, and lo, there's one of my beloved sneakers.

Then, during Jesus Christ Pose, the other one is launched from God know's where, and it hits me in the side of the face.

I wore them for probably three of four more years.

Not only do those simpleton canvas-and-rubber bastards last and last, but they're loyal as dogs.

Holy shit. We do have something in common, you perverted bastard. Started wearing Chucks when I was 13 and I haven't stopped since. I probably own a dozen pairs. I know this will sound sacrilegious at first, but I have been wearing the low cut slip on ones a lot lately--the ones with the elastic band to hold them on and no laces. Comfy as shit and easy to get in and out of. Check them out. I just bought another two pairs last weekend. Maybe I'll show you them before we go glue sniffing together.

I lost an Irish peak-cap at Grateful Dead show in Landover, Md., back in 1988 or 89.
I spent a whole day walking around looking for it, and finally some people in a car, they were lined up for a mile or more trying to get in, said — 'Hey, are you looking for your hat?'
It was way back in the line of incoming cars. I don't know how it got there, but some people in a VW bus had it and gave it back to me.

Ragu: you sick cock-eating freak. The only shoes I would wear without laces are:

    1) Checkerboard Vans.

    2) Flip-flops.

First the dwarf pony, and now laceless Chucks? My God, man, just put yourself in prison and save the rest of us the trial.

(Oh, and I'm looking forward to seeing you in Toronto. We'll eat samosas and drink sangria and dance to Billy Idol.)

Buck: I couldn't say why, but your nice story reminded me of that episode ofTthe Simpsons where Homer eats the weird chili and Johnny Cash plays the talking coyote.

My low-top Chuck's are usually the unbleached, although the current pair started out as white. The store didn't have any unbleaced in stock when I went to buy sneakers.

Jones: You Godless, Tranny-chasing chub nubber...

The best thing about the laceless Chucks is that they still have the holes where the laces should go. A surprising number of people have believed me when I told them that I was issued them when they put me on suicide watch.
