We were discussing at work last night the lump sum vs. annual payments and all agreed that we wouldn't live to see the last few annual payments.

If I had $2 million free and clear I would retire today at age 40. You should be be able to make about 5% on that, which would be $100,000 per year. I don't make $100,000 working every day of my life right now, so I'd be ahead. Actually, I wouldn't even have to make the 100k and still live as well as I do now. We don't have any kids to leave it to, considering life expectancy, minimal interest plus dipping into the $2 million would see me through.

Not to mention that you don't know what's going to happen in the future. Say the country goes broke and the apparatus to pay no longer exists? Say there's a war and half the country is wiped out?

If I take the lum sump, it's all good. I'll be in my Superman ice lair with my rotating bed and roomful of disco dancers.

I don't think she had the lump sum option back then. I remember her telling us that once you take taxes out, then spread it over 20 years or whatever it was, you couldn't retire or anything like that.

Cities do that all the time, too. There's plenty of places (nightclubs, liquor stores, convenience stores) that tend to attract trouble and have been legislated out of business by enacting ordinances regarding their operation.

My stepdad won some Bahamas vacation or something from a radio station. They blacked out so many weekends that the prize expired before he could ever use it ... and then they tried to send him a tax bill. He was having none of that.

I like that you used the noun form, roomful, in this case. The difference, of course, is that a roomful of disco dancers is a theoretical quantity that doesn't vary based on the size of the room. I'm wondering how many disco dancers would qualify as a roomful.

I've wanted to break this news to my friends at SportsJournalists.com first. I have turned in my resignation at my current gig and with good reason. I AM PART OF A GROUP THAT PURCHASED ONE OF THE THREE WINNING TICKETS.
