Aren't they going to run out of teams with winning records?

No chance in hell. The NCAA owns the NIT (they bought the rights a couple of years ago).
The NCAA will squash this one within days if not hours.

And for once we can all say the NCAA got something right.

By the same token -- look at the percentage of teams in the four major sports that make the playoffs......

    NFL -- 16 of 32 I believe? That's 50 percent
Major League baseball -- 8 of what, 30? about 27 percent
NHL -- 16 of 30 or so? Somewhere near 50 percent
NBA -- 16 of 32 or so? About 50 percent

WIth this additional tournament there are 113 of 335 or so teams in the postseason -- that is about 33 percent which is far less than at least three of the four major sports so it is not that far out of line.

OK, this might work is they did the following...

Four DI teams (preferably a major conference team that finished very poorly, like a Penn State for example)
    Four DII teams
    Four NAIA teams
    Four DIII teams

    I would watch that.

Zagoshe: Your math is OK, but like my mother used to tell me on those occasions when I did something idiotic, "Just because everyone else does it, that doesn't mean you have to do it, too."

There's no league where 50 percent of the teams deserve to qualify for the playoffs. Never has been, never will be. Of course, when you keep everyone "alive" for the playoffs, then the fans stay excited longer, they buy tickets because their team is in a "playoff" race, etc., etc. It's all contrived.

for the record, 12 teams in the NFL make the playoffs. four division winners, two wild cards from each conference.

    Zag,

I see you point about other leagues. However, most college basketball conferences also have conference tournaments that are considered postseason play.

If you are talking about simply qualifying for postseason play (which in most cases leads to a chance to play for the national title), than the percentage of college hoops teams that qualify for the postseason is already far greater than in any professional sport.
