The blame game is a tough one.

No matter how many times the kid declared his intentions or put out really creepy videos, it's still a colossal leap to think that him, or really anyone would follow through on this kind of thing. It sounds like he was in therapy. I don't know... If your kid showed these kinds of signs, I think most people would immediately get them psychological help, but it's really tough to imagine someone following through on it.

I hate blaming movies, TV, video games, music etc... Some people are just fucked up and would still be fucked up if they listened to Yanni or to KMFDM.

As I said before, if Newtown didn't lead to tougher gun laws, nothing will.

I don't know if she's read them or not, probably, but I will pass them along. I do think there is a segment of the psychiatric community -- far from a majority, but a high enough percentage to be significant -- that is either lazy, or in some cases overworked, and prone to give in to parents who beg to have their kids medicated. Parents get worn down trying to take care of kids with issues and want to sedate them. Doctors get worn down by the parents and everyone takes the easy way out even if it's not the best way to treat the kids. And plenty of parents will go from doctor to doctor until they find one who prescribes the drugs they want.

We can discuss it. Sure. What evidence do we have of it as a possible contributing influence other than a single data point of correlation?

I think his parents did all they could for him.
The material objects figured largely into his value system and they were placed in his lap.
Probably to furnish what little happiness the guy was capable of deriving from life.
But skimming his demented written statement, he did not actively give or receive love.
Had thought this was about the carnal aspect of intercourse, but he was ruthless and brainsick enough to commit rape at any time.
He wanted the benefits of love without having to work for any of them.

24/7 media coverage sending out the message that when you are frustrated/angry and want to piss off and scare society the maximum amount, a gun rampage is the way to do it.

In the post-Newtown analysis, some experts touched on this. There is some thought that the exposure gained in doing such a thing is attraction enough for some very small number of especially sick people.

As I understand it, the Santa Barbara shooter would have been in violation of NONE of the laws actually proposed post-Newtown.

It's a data point of correlation so it belongs in the conversation.

I don't know what the full conversation is and whether it contributed or not. But it's a data point of correlation.

    Not really.

Everything the kid ever did at any point in his entire life is now a data point of correlation.

It has now appeared in the conversation. Unless someone has more compelling evidence, it can now disappear.

His dad was a unit director for a movie about picking off kids like wild turkeys.
    You do the math, genius.

Overprescribing ADHD drugs may be a real problem, but it's far less of a problem than underprescribing real help to actually mentally ill people.

I guess we should be lucky Quentin Tarantino and Eli Roth haven't had any kids.
