Within my daughter’s lifetime 9/11 will become just another excuse for a sale. If we can do it for a day dedicated to our war dead, we can do it with 9/11.

I don't remember any Pearl Harbor sales, although perhaps there have been some. I'm sure there will be the same stigma for 9/11 for many years to come.

It hit me in 2020 that the pandemic relegated 9/11 to a mere couple of paragraphs of an American history book. The Trump Presidency and the invasion of Ukraine only made that clearer. The problems 9/11 created, the wars it spawned now seem almost quaint and relics of the 20th century, whereas in the moment they seemed like something new. The human cost remains as terrible as ever, of course.

I would like to see Biden and the Congress sunset the AUMF - don't know how many US and international deaths are the result of this short and tragically open-ended law passed when they were still recovering bodies out of Ground Zero. My guess it's been the authorization for 95 percent of military actions around the globe in the last 20 years. How many of the legislators are even still around?

I can't believe they didn't put some "Let's Rolls" on the menu.

Also, that's a restaurant at one of our member clubs, so giant facepalm.

On 9/11 I was web editor for a B2B weekly which had moved from the WTC across the Hudson to Newark a year earlier. In the hour or so after the second plane crashed there was a lot of misinformation and confusion, reports were coming in by the minute, no one knew what was next, and it was utter chaos. The U.S. was in lockdown, and reports then came in that more planes were ready to drop out of the sky. Our veteran chief of editorial operations stood in the middle of the newsroom, clasped his hands to his face and with a wide-eyed, white-faced look of terror screamed,

    "WHAT IS HAPPENING?!"

I said, "Maybe we can get our shit together, make calls, and start covering this news as our readers expect."

I moved on from the company years ago, but that craven pussy bitch of a journo is now senior VP.
