That led me to this, which I don’t recall reading before. Hunter S. Thompson had the whole thing wired for sound on 9-12-01.

Wow, just when you think after 21 years that you've read everything from that day that could piss you off ...

    I hope she was fired.

Back in the college paper days, we had a young reporter who had the chance to connect with one of our students who witnessed a similar event. Couldn’t do it, she said, she had dinner or a meeting or some event.

I hope they fired her and spread her name everywhere so other editors would know not to hire her. Damn.

Nope. Not fired. Was @ the Toronto Star for years after that and then moved on to other fashion editing jobs.

I just found the whole article, because I was curious. If it mitigates your reactions at all, it was a "Fashion Notebook" column, and it ran 9 days later. It's so vapid, it's actually beyond awesome 21 years later. Edward R. Murrow, she wasn't. But you can actually tell she was doing the best she knew how, bless her red-carpeted heart.

What the hell event was that? The Hiroshima bombing? The Berlin Wall falling?

I particularly loved the renting of the limo and toasting the Big Apple on the way across the border.

I remember my brother in law was stuck somewhere (can't remember where) for work on 9/11, and getting back to New York was a bitch afterward. Finding a limo driver willing to take them to Toronto must have felt like a stroke of luck, given that travel pretty much shut down. I don't know about leaving NYC, but my memory was that the bridges and tunnels were shut to traffic coming in for a while. So I am trying to put it into some context in my head. But yeah, the Appletinis in the back of the limo was perfect for that column. With glowing hearts, we see the rise.
