I'm speechless. Thank you, Dave. That story is even better than I imagined.

Never heard: Was there any sort of observance or Bloody Brain binge in Van's memory at XLI?

I was directed to this thread last night, so please forgive the grave dig. But I'm glad I got sent here. Thanks dreunc1542.

But wow. I just read the entire thread. There are so many great stories on here by so many great people.

I never knew Van McKenzie. Never heard of him until long after I came here. But seeing this thread makes me wish I worked for him.

If I could be only a fraction as great as he was, I'd know I could never top the effort.

I'll definitely ask for a Bloody Brain or two now.

I just got halfway through re-reading it. Crying again, and laughing again.

And I still feel short-changed for never having met the man.

With my dad passing 2 months ago, it brought back memories of Van.
Physically, they were similar, big, bearded, loud and a lot of fun to be with.
It is just damn sad to see anyone die when they should have had a few more years of life to live.
Van gave me some great memories, stories I love telling, and I only hung out with him for a few days.
I'm glad to see this thread revived.

This is my favorite thread ever on SportsJournalists.com. It's too bad it took something so sad and horrible to make it happen.

    I see papers hire consultants.
I see sections hire marketing and research firms.
I see chains hire seven-figure "Innovation Officers."

With Van, we would accomplish all that at the weekly planning meeting.
