Ah, I remember my days of making plans like that....usually with disastrous results. The lesson: Never wait on things like this.

Two quick stories, both from my college days.

With the first one, I had multiple wasted opportunities there, but I decided to try to salvage things and see if I could get past the friend thing with her. She was rehearsing constantly to be in a play, so I was waiting until after opening night because she was so stressed about the thing. The night before, she gets a letter from an ex who was in the military and stationed in Germany calls her, asking her to wait for him and give it all another shot. Very romantic shit. I was toast.

She found out about my big plan anyway....the whole thing turned into an embarrassment and we barely spoke even as friends for a while. Didn't really get to talking again until around the time of my wedding. Also found out much later that I'd had a shot, just never the right timing.

Earlier that same year, there was other girl...I swear, picture a young Marisa Tomei with red hair. Very smart, too. Somehow, was interested in me. We start talking and I decide I promise myself I'm going to ask her out at the office Christmas party (we both worked at the school paper). Took me all of two minutes to get her alone, and maybe two more for the plan to go to shit. She had just finished up her second degree and was leaving to move out of state in two days.

I was told after she moved that the girl was very much into me (ok, so she was smart, but with bad taste).

Neither event was tragic, though the first was kind of a pain. But let me restate the lesson -- NEVER wait on this kind of thing.

Secondary question, wholly unrelated to the first question:

Is commitment a lost art? A friend of a friend got my cell number and started texting me today, offering to ... er ... well ... take care of my needs, so to speak.
I play ball against his girlfriend. They adopted a baby eight months ago. For all I thought, they were a fairly happy twosome.
Trouble is, this happens to me more often than not ... getting offers of ... well ... favours from men who are supposedly in monogamous relationships.
I wonder if it's a vibe I give off (don't think I've ever shown any kind of interest other than friendship in this guy) or whether the days of monogamy are over ... if they ever began.

He might want you to join him and his wife in the throes.

You're a single hottie. Go for it. The guys you like won't text you back, so you need some kind of action.

Dudes are just way more confident when they've got a girl. That's a fact. The guy's probably stroking his ego a little bit by sending feelers around, just to see what he can get and hiding behind being taken if he can't get it.

What, don't look at me. I haven't done it, I swear!

It's unfortunate. It's just further evidence that people, in general, suck.
