Not knowing how into history UTShooter is (or if UTShooter is a big baseball fan) I suggested the historical sites in the Trenton-area and a baseball game at the minor league stadium. Didn't suggest visiting the train station or any of the other bad parts.
Plus Trenton has some fantastic restaurants in the Chambersburg section.

It might have been on display in my journalism professor's office, but he just retired last year, so I don't think its on display anywhere.
I figure the journalism professor might have had it on display since loved the other classic Trentonian headline "HEAD HAD AIDS" (about a head that was found on a golf course and tests done on it - to try determining who it was, found the AIDS virus was present)

Gettysburg is only an hour and a half from DC, and definitely worth it. They have ghost tours at night too, if you're into that. It's one thing I still want to do.

But don't even for a second think about renting an RV around here. We have enough fucking traffic, we don't need no RVing going on. It's extremely inconsiderate, and if you're going to act that way on our roads then I'm going to have one more asshole to honk my horn and yell at until I can cut their ass off.

    Serenity now!

There are a couple breaks in US 90 currently, thanks to the destruction of bridges between Ocean Springs and Biloxi and also Pass Christian and Bay St. Louis, but you can get around that with (relatively) short detours, although I think the bridge over the Rigolets east of NOLA is still out, too. Another detour, but do-able. Bay of St. Louis bridge opens two lanes in May, I believe. Biloxi Bay bridge opens two lanes in November.[/formersunheraldtransportationbeatwriter]

Dog tracks and jai alai frontons are often overlooked in this type of adventure. I don't want you to have any regrets when you get back home.

From D.C., head to Wilmington, N.C., Southport and some of the other areas in neighboring Brunswick County. Sunset Beach, just north of Myrtle Beach, S.C. is also a quiet alternative. Charleston, S.C., Beaufort and Savannah are also good choices in my book.

  11. My vote, if you're going north toward Gettysburg out of DC:

Head toward Montreal, hitting Cooperstown on the way. We did Montreal and Toronto as part of a road trip about 10 years ago and I would love to go back. Montreal is as close to Europe as I'm going to get since I don't do airplanes these days (went to Rome while in high school). Canada's my idea of a cool vacation, but lately it's been all Disney World. When the kids are older we're definitely going back.

After Montreal, head back east through Ottawa (beautiful ... what I saw out the window of the van we rented .. went there on a day trip from Montreal because the Montreal casino workers were on strike and I really wanted to gamble) and Toronto (a really clean version of any big American city is the way I remember it). Then head back to the US, hitting Niagara Falls on your way to Cleveland (R&R HOF, maybe an Indians game) then on to Chicago (wife's hometown ... lots to do there) and west toward Mount Rushmore. After that, I guess it's south through whatever BFE there is before hitting Dallas and then Austin.

My only true cross country trip was 15 years ago: Atlanta-Chicago-KC-Dallas-El Paso-Phoenix-LA-SD. On the way back we hit the Grand Canyon and spent the night in Alburquerque, then worked our way eventually back toward Dallas and home to Atlanta. SD to Albuquerque coming back was very long, but the most boring part of the trip was I-20 and I-10 from Dallas to El Paso in one day.

At that time of the year you should swing through Green Bay and attend Packers training camp.
