Oh, sorry, I meant to cover H.L.'s echo chamber comment as well.

Do you really think twitter is more of an echo chamber than the executive offices of the New York Times?

Talk about a bubble. Following a diverse group of smart people on twitter could have only helped to prevent the echo chamber effect for folks like Abramson and Baquet.

It's an ego stroke. I wish I could quit the damn thing. There are suddenly plenty of writers is like a lot more if they has zero social media presence.

I don't know why Abramson or Baquet would tweet. They don't have a byline or a voice. They don't break news. They make decisions on behalf of the Times. Even if they were to limit their tweets only to explaining their news judgment and thought process, anyone could string together evidence of bias or conflict. I don't see an upside to it.

I'm happy to agree with your zinger. It is a total ego stoke. But it's the same reason the Gawker crowd loves it too. They jerk one another off more than any longform cadre, they just throw a tantrum when it's not their friends getting the stroke.

Thanks to her, Congress passed the Lilly Ledbetter Act, which restarts the 180-day statute of limitations clock each time a discriminatory paycheck is issued. It was the first bill President Obama signed in office.

If you are the only one who holds a job, you can't argue that you are underpaid under discrimination laws,even if you made less than your predecessors. So not a real comparison.

Let's clear one thing up. Auletta says she was earning less than someone else at the paper when she was the managing editor, not the executive editor. As editor, she earned more than Keller in almost every year, just not in base salary it seems. But in total compensation, she was getting what Keller got if not more. Now, whether that was because of bonuses and options kicking in is unclear.

Tallest midget, and all that. (BTW, I agree it's the best news paper website, mostly because of the content, but the design is very good in my opinion too.)

But, it's not newspaper websites they are worries about:

The report largely ignores legacy competitors and focuses on the new wave of digital companies, including First Look Media, Vox, Huffington Post, Business Insider, and BuzzFeed.

There are problems with folks (like Baquet?) who are "unfamiliar with the web", which leads to too much of a focus on Page One, and content being published to the web based on evening print deadlines:

“The newsroom is unanimous: we are focusing too much time and energy on Page One,” the report says.

Another problem: Most content is published online around evening print deadlines.

Also a central issue is “a cadre of editors who remain unfamiliar with the web.”

And, maybe worst of all, if you Google a story you heard about, that the Times broke, you're more likely to end up on the Huffington Post, reading a recap of the Times article:

It also includes an unusually frank exchange with a competitor, an executive at Huffington Post who is described as contrasting that site’s facility with search engine optimization with the Times’ failures in that area.

“An executive there described watching the aggregation outperform our original content after Nelson Mandela’s death,” the report says. “‘You guys got crushed,’ he said. ‘I was queasy watching the numbers. I’m not proud of this. But this is your competition. You should defend the digital pickpockets from stealing your stuff with better headlines, better social.’”

did anyone actually read Snowfall?

I made a couple different attempts and never got through it.

Seems like I read somewhere that average amount spent on Snowfall was three minutes. That number may not be right and I might have seen it here but the general consensus was people went to look at it but didn't read the whole thing.

I started, a few times, but would get to the cool flyover mountain visual and the ADD took over. Never got beyond those mountains. I still would like to finish it. One day.
