How dare you? My kids love watching me rock back and forth in my office, neurotically checking Twitter, sipping iced office, getting into fights about #longform! and writing four sentences an hour for a story that's due in three weeks.

Many years ago, when David was about 10, he came with his mom to a VCU game I was covering. Seth Greenberg was coaching Long Beach State. The team won at Kansas on a Saturday and came to play a decent VCU team on a Monday. EDIT - thanks to Songbird having a better memory than me, I have the order of the games wrong. It was lose at VCU and then go win at Kansas.

It got its ass whipped by VCU. The refs even gave it up midway through the second half. One of the VCU players jumped, grabbed the rim, pulled himself up a ways and slammed the ball back in. Must have hung on the rim a good three seconds. No call Greenberg went ballistic.

After the game, I hauled David into the press room with me. There were only 3-4 people covering the game so I figured it would be an OK one-time thing. The SID was on board with it. Greenberg comes in and is steamed, no one says anything for a while. So I finally said what the heck and asked: What's the deal, you're not allowed to hang on the rim for a putback on the west coast?

He thought that was the funniest thing ever so he laughed and then went off on the refs, his team, life, more on his team, the refs again. Great stuff.

David thought it was the coolest thing ever. I told him it was hardly ever like that and to please find something else to do with his life.

    So he did.

I think the Long Beach-Kansas game was a Monday because Kansas had just become the new No. 1 team. Great win for the 49ers.

I actually did not know he was Dave's kid, so thanks for the knowledge. In light of all that (ie, the wife; background), the kid's unconventional upbringing makes more sense.

Still odd though and I don't think it's doing well by the kid long term to have such an eccentric upbringing

One of my abiding memories of the '80s Celtics was a practice at the gym at Hellenic College where I watched Bill Walton's kids beat the snot out of each other in the bleachers. Nobody cared or noticed. Yeah, one of them was Luke.

Hmmm. Maybe I had it bass ackwards, they came into VCU first, on a Saturday? Whatever, I do know they beat Kansas and lost at VCU on the same trip

Keep telling people (as much as you can on here anyway) how to raise their kids.

Maybe Williams was worried the kid would dominate the Sox during the Father/Son game?

What about those who make $7,439 an hour working on the Internet? They deserve recognition too.

It's a tricky situation and an interesting story. If you're a dad pulled away from family a lot you get it.
But you're not going to get much sympathy when you substitute a clubhouse for school, or its inherent social structure.

South Side Sox has had a funny discussion.
Adam LaRoche's retirement about son's presence, not health

Let's talk about this, journalistically, for a second. Why the fuck would you hint at something, not give it away in a manner that implies you don't quite have it on the record, then when a follower correctly guesses, you're like "Very impressive! Winner."

C'mon man, either you have the story or don't. I don't see how a lucky guess greenlights your info.
