It's difficult for me, after last year's shitshow, to imagine that a world existed wherein fans would say, "Hey, LaRoche is batting! I'm excited, as something good is likely to occur!"

Yeah. Not anymore. There was a time where I was mildly excited, though. It was fleeting, but neat.

    The benchmark:

If ESPN is doing a radio promo for Sunday night Baseball, does your name get mentioned or even considered? Same for, in the TV promo, do we see you in the promo during some quick hit video montage.

If not, you're not a star.

Come see the White Sox and Adam LaRoche this Sunday as they try and stop the Royals...

    No. Not a star.

It might be time for LaRoche to consider retirement with or without this incident. He's 36, so who knows? But he was a hell of a hitter and well above average defender who got most of his at-bats from the Nos. 4 and 5 holes over a 12-year career. His managers obviously thought a lot of him.

The "Is Adam LaRoche a star or nah?" is one of the weirdest debates in SJ.com history. Amusing, but weird.

Because of the last 48 hours, he will be known as the guy who bolted the White Sox threes weeks before the season because the White Sox wouldn't keep up this special exception for Bring Your Son To Work Year. The team was all set to keep the other special exception in place -- to pay $13 million for a guy to hitting .207.

Solid career, not a star but a good career.

White Sox brass is probably, quietly, thrilled they get to save the money if they don't have to pay it for that level of production. More money freed up to jump into the Hosmer Sweepstakes in two years.

Not even an All Star once. Shit, Scott Cooper made it twice.

Zimmerman will be ready for you in a couple of years or you can take Tyler Moore right now. Chicago, the great dumping ground for OTH 1Bs out of Washington. The contract someone gave Dunn was stunning. I thought the contract they gave LaRoche was reasonable but there was strong reason to believe he was on the decline. That's why Washington chose not to pursue him.

LaRoche was better than good for a long time. Close to great here and there, never really great. But as Cranberry noted, he had a very long career as a better than average player. Star? Depends on your definition. I was glad he was on the team I liked when he was there.

He's not asking for an exception.

Sons are allowed in the clubhouse. On a veteran team, in the summer, there will often be several around.

Yes, it's different that his son is around all season long. So what? It's allowed.

Increasingly bad PR for the Sox, but they've been in the news for worse.

Yeah, we allow casual dress in the newsroom, but we didn't expect you to wear khakis and a polo every damn day.

Could you put on a shirt and tie even 50% of the time?

I hate people who take advantage of their rights.

Their message isn't altogether wrong, though a clubhouse isn't your typical workplace.
Their timing is atrocious. Should have been addressed in January. Unless of course they saw it as a way to unload him once it became clear that back wasn't going to get better.
They wouldn't think like that, would they!?!?!
