    Yeah, the crazy ones among us who actually wanted someone to report and confirm the story.

    Seriously.

    Though, if what he says is true, it sounds like Williams could have, if he wanted to, found a workable compromise.

    Sounds like it would have been acceptable to all if Drake was around, and had been a glorified clubhouse boy, who shagged fly balls during batting practice, as long as he wasn't participating in drills, like he was a member of the team.

    But, that's not what Williams communicated to LaRoche. LaRoche was told to not bring him around so much, which is very different.

    Which means that Williams is still likely lying.

    It also means "Bob" didn't get the full story from his multiple "sources".

    Sleep is tough, but not because there's a newborn in the house. Fiona won't be home for four months or more.

    Long days in the NICU are emotionally draining though.

    Her first surgery is today.

    I find it funny this thread was actually staying on topic pretty well until getting sj.com'd with a discussion about bias from a person who fills weekly NFL threads with non-stop discussion of his favorite team. :D
    To me, it seems like LaRoche was banking on reactions being like the one of exmediahack's co-worker: "Gee, the White Sox won't let a player's son come to the games with him? WTF?" I saw this thread last week but it didn't interest me so I didn't bother looking at it. Then I heard a brief mention on the radio along the lines what exmediahack's co-worker thought. It seemed like there was more to the story, so I looked up this thread.
    Neither LaRoche nor Williams come out looking good in this, IMO. Based on how LaRoche did last year, it's easy to see why there's the suspicion the action is being taken now simply because of on-the-field performance and thus Williams comes off poorly. Then again, if LaRoche was indeed asked to simply dial it back a bit as far as bringing Drake into the clubhouse and he decided to "show him" by retiring, he blew off $13 million instead of meeting management in the middle.
    There was a point brought up earlier in this thread about not knowing how often Drake could be brought around. I think there is some validity in that concern. From what Williams has been quoted as saying, he didn't give Adam a set number of times he could bring Drake in. Is 10 the limit? 20? 50? Not knowing the limit, it would soon become awkward and uncomfortable to bring your child to your workplace. A limit has been set, but you have no idea what the limit is and yet you're being expected to police yourself. If you bring your child to work 11 times and the limit was actually 10, you're wrong even though you didn't know the limit was 10 because you weren't told a number. I wouldn't be surprised if Williams was hoping the situation would become so uncomfortable for LaRoche (maybe added to with a few "jokes" about Drake being present again) that he either gave up bringing his son or quit the team.
    Then again, even if the company policy is you can bring your child to work, doesn't common sense tell you that doesn't mean every single day? Unless your child is on the company's payroll, why even push the company by bringing your child every day? I think most people, if told "Look Adam, we love having Drake hang out with us, but could you dial it back a bit?" would realize they overstepped their boundaries just a bit and not want to piss off management and thus comply. Especially if complying means keeping a salary (whether a journalism salary or $13 million in salary). I think a reasonable response would be something like, "I understand where you're coming from and I appreciate you letting me know there's a limit. Just so we're clear, and to make sure I'm not overstepping any boundaries, what exactly is the limit?"

    It's a little like unlimited vacation time or unlimited parental leave that some companies are touting.

    It sounds great, but at what point do co-workers become resentful?

    The dumbest decision I ever made was when my daughter was born. My wife's brother died in the morning, while she was in labor. Then our girl was born later that afternoon, during the Bears game. I believe I was back at work on Wednesday. I didn't even have anything to do! I just didn't want to be "that guy."

    I was home for a month after the births of both of my kids. I was proudly "that guy," and I wouldn't trade it for the world.

    Let someone else be "that guy" who argues that my job is more important than my kids.

    Ugh.

    It's occurred to me that there are no true coffee/espresso machine emergencies.

    I'm also really lucky that I had previously arranged, long before we knew there would be any complications, for a former co-worker from out of town, to come and work for me for the entire months of March and April.

    He's a better tech than me, and he puts in longer hours, so work wise, I'm ok. And, we're probably going to extend the arrangement.
