AJC and Hartford Courant not covering Super Bowl

You ever ridden on a Greyhound? It's the coach of the damned. As much stress as an airport can cause, I'll take a hundred trips through O'Hare before I take one cross-country trip on a bus that includes any kind of extended layover at a downtown bus station.

I've done cross country on Greyhound before. Not the easiest thing, for sure. And I'd prefer Amtrak or even driving, if i have someone to split the time with.

Back when I was a university SID, I'd fly as much as a dozen flights per month during busy seasons. After spending the better part of day stranded in the Minneapolis airport because of cancellations and delays and then vomitting on the flight because of air turbulence, I figure there has to be a better way. Oh, and I won't even talk about security hassles.

Ironically, you can actually buy a 27-inch color television and arrange to have it delivered at one of the shops in the Minneapolis airport, but good luck finding a fresh pair of socks or underwear. So if your luggage is "in transit", tough deal.

But, hey, it's just one man's opinion.

Four words by Malcolm X: "By Any Means Necessary."
You do what you have to do to get the job done. Many of those who say they would never board a bus to cover the Super Bowl isn't being totally honest. If that was the only viable option available, you take it. Big deal, you're a bus for a few hours. You deal with it, cover the game and leave. Life does go on.
As for a paper such as Richmond not making the trip, I don't think it's a major deal because there are other secondary cities not covering the game as well.
Obviously, someone not sports friendly is calling the shots in both Richmond and Atlanta. Just a sad state of affairs of this industry.

Actually, a LOT of minor league and small college teams still bus virtually everywhere. So I've done my share of bus miles.

Several years ago, one writer from the (Spokane, Wash.) Spokesman-Review accompanied the Spokane Chiefs WHL hockey team on a trip through Alberta and Saskatchewan. Got some great stories that I doubt you would get otherwise. Good reading.

Consider that foreplay for the next round of buyouts and layoffs. Those tell the readers the same damn thing.

Not to pile on here but the AJ-C didn't send anyone to Georgia-Florida last night either.

Wonder if they'll staff today's 11 AM press conference when Dennis Felton gets fired.

That's unimaginable as well. That's a five-hour drive with one night in a hotel.

Hell, they could have sent someone to Tampa and made them drive to Gainesville to cover that game.

That's valid. Covering the Masters is much more expensive than covering the Super Bowl.

    Augusta is an hour away.

The point is, when a paper like the AJC is skipping the Super Bowl and a Florida-Georgia men's basketball game, you know the place has gone completely into the shitter. I'm sad for the once proud paper and I'm embarrassed for those who still work there.

It was what it was Mizzou. Those days are gone forever.
