Drip, I interviewed there -- with a cool, crazy layout man; Bob Wright, editor; Pen and Pencil -- in 1981 or 1982, right? Not long before the bad news came. Went south instead. But LOVED the place.

You are correct about newspapers not keeping exclusive rights to their talents. As far as the talking heads are concerned, yes there are those who listen at their every word as if it were gospel. However, I think people are savvy enough to realize that its just one man/woman's opinion on a particular subject.

I was there with Bob in the 70s before he went to the left coast. Good man. The Pen and Pencil was an excellent watering hole and where Pete Dexter and Tex Cobb got the shit kicked out of them. Good times.

  4. Just checked the Minneapolis Star Tribune Web site to see if it sent anyone to Tampa. The paper's fantastic NFL guy, Mark Craig, is there and appears to be filing one story after another. Oddly enough, though, there are three Super Bowl-related articles on the Web site's front page. The two from Craig are about Roethlisberger and Warner, while the third, from the wire, is on Pittsburgh running back Gary Russell, a former Gopher. Just seems bizarre. I can read an infinite number of words on Warner and Big Ben just about anywhere, but stories about the local guy who was nearly out of football and is now a big piece of the Steeler puzzle are few and far between.

I think it's excellent the Star Tribune is present, but I'd much rather have local angles (Tomlin, Fitzgerald, Russell, etc., etc., etc.) than the over-played ones. To be fair, they could have already pursued those stories earlier in the week and I simply missed them.

Man, if you want to talk about a business that is overkill to the gills, THAT is it. There must like 30 freakin' columnists and "experts" for every single congressman.

In this situation, at the AJC, at the present time, it's not off the mark.

I don't care how many Super Bowls MGrad covered or how hard he worked.

Have any of you people seen this paper in the last three months?

I saw a few when I went home for Christmas. Not much to read. I'm pretty sure the Christmas day sports section had just two or three staff-written stories in it.

So that joint is in Tampa and it's bankrupt, right? Maybe the pressure to cut and slash isn't as great, since all the creditors are SOL now.

It's not a waste of money, per se.

It's spending money you do not have.

I may need a new pair of shoes, but if my bank account is $0, I'm not buying shoes.

I love that people on here let us know they're having a one-night stand while they're in the middle of it. And I'm also honored to be on the same board as someone who bought a Russian bride. :D

Just had to say those things OT; I've said my piece on the issue at hand.

Ah, I guess "new best friend" is a misnomer. We've been going out since early September. Sorry for giving a false impression. :)
