Is Miguel Cabrera hitting his way into the discussion? After a big game last night, he is up to fourth in the AL in batting (.341), third in OPS (.977), 7th in RBI (84) and 8th in homers (26) and finishing very strong for a Tigers team that is leading the AL Central.

The downside being that he is not a very good defender, certainly nowhere near the level of Mauer and Teixeira.

    He's in the runner-up discussion.

Jeter may not win the MVP, but Peter King stamped him the best player of his lifetime in MMQB. The trophy must be a yogurt pretzel dipped in a latte.

Right now, I agree with you. If he keeps mashing like he has all of August and Mauer slows down at all, that may be a different story.

The Twins are 4 games out of first place. They ARE in a pennant race.

As of right now, Mauer is the pick, and it should probably be unanimous.

    1. Joe Mauer
    2. Derek Jeter
    3. Kendry Morales or Mark Teixeira

Agreed on No. 1 at least, but I don't see how Jeter is even in the top three. I'd take Mauer, Teixeira, Morales and Miguel Cabrera ahead of him right now.

I saw a note that if Jeter hits .330 or better he joins Honus Wagner as the only shortstops 35 and up to do that. And Wagner did it twice, the last time in 1911.

And yet he's still not one of the top 3 players in the AL this season.

Jeter's probably in the top three. He might be more valuable to the Yankees than Teixeira, who only began to hit once A-Rod came back.

After Mauer it's very subjective, but I'd put Jeter in my top 3.

young deserves to be in the mvp discussion this season and when all is said and done should get a look from the hall of fame

Teixeira still had to do the hitting. And it's not just the return of Rodriguez that got him going. This has always been his pattern, stinking it up for at least a month to start the season before putting up his usual big numbers. Figure in his impact on that team defensively and the fact that his numbers are a good bit better than Jeter's and I think Teixeira is easily the best candidate on the Yankees.

Jeter may end up among the top three vote-getters, but I don't think he deserves it.

I think you can also make strong arguments for Young, Cabrera and Morales over Jeter. But JC is right in that this is subjective.
