Pretty boring game but that's a reflection of the CFL this season. Scoring has been way down, defenses are taking over and there's been none of those free-wheeling 37-35 come from behind wins that CFL fans love.

Calvillo was horrible and only in the CFL would a coach (BC's Buuono) pull Dickenson from time to time and replace him for a play or two with his two back-ups. Dickenson was terrific. Ballsy performance

I think Montreal should change their team name from Alouettes to the Bills.

And was it just me, or did any of the other Canucks here find the Nelly Furtado half time "concert" awful? And what was she wearing? Well, at least there was no wardrobe malfunction.,

I never stick around for the halftime performances. They are always terrible, especially when a good looking chick is forced to go the parka route due to the weather. Mind you though i usually find the Super Bowl halftime shows just as bad, if not worse because they actually drop a lot of money to try and do a good job. The CFL spends all of their money on getting an act in and then have nothing left over for production.

Very little drama at all, especially compared to all of the other big games on the weekend.

So, Beef, are you gonna watch the Vanier Cup on Saturday? Should be a helluva football game.

I actually just may watch it. I have no rooting interest, but might as well stick with the Huskies as the West rep and host. I don't know though. They had a tough time with ottawa while Laval shithauled Acadia. I haven't really been able to follow either that closely this year, how well do they matchup? It doesn't look like I'll have much to cover Saturday, so I should be able to. Why'd they go a week after the Grey Cup this year? I always thought they played the week before or the week of? Also Is it going to be on CBC or does the Score have the Vanier rights?

    Laval's ranked #2 and Huskies #4.

It'll be a very close game. Laval was 7-1, Saskatchewn 6-2 on the regular season.

Beef, there's no dishonour in Saskatchewan having a tough time with the Gee Gees. Ottawa absolutely destroyed the defending champs in the Yates (sniff!), downpour and all. Sure, Laval rolled over Acadia, but Acadia was only ranked #10 because you've gotta rank an Atlantic team somewhere in there.

    I don't think that's true.

I you look at the rankings throughout the 10 weeks, Acadia was ranked in the top 10 four times, and as high as sixth one week.

In the other six weeks there wasn't a team from the Atlantic Conference represented.

Oh, and I think it'll be a good game. Go Huskies! :)

Right now, on ESPN Classic Canada, I am watching the 1977 Grey Cup game (the Ice Bowl) between the original Alouettes and the Edmonton Eskimos. The score is 10-3 at halftime but Pat Marsden has just advised CBC viewers that anything can happen in the second half.

And does it ever. The Alouettes, who included a linebacker and part-time punter named Wally Buono, figure out that they can deal with the icy field by putting staples in the bottom of their shoes. The final score -- Montreal 41 Edmonton 6.

Als kicker Don Sweet accounted for 23 points (six field goals, three TD conversions and two singles), setting a Grey Cup record that still stands, but QB Sonny Wade won the championship MVP award for the third and final time in his career. Sweet settled for the Most Valuable Canadian award, a trophy he also won three different times.

Another Grey Cup record set during the day that still stands -- 68,318 fans packed what was then the fairly new Olympic Stadium in Montreal. This despite brutal weather (it was the Ice Bowl, remember?) and a city transit strike.

Of course, this was the demarcation point between the two franchises. The Eskimos won the next five Grey Cups and the original Alouettes (1946-81) had folded before Edmonton's run was done. Montreal has only won one Cup since.

Futbol is Spanish (I think) for football in relation to the game known in Canada and the U.S. as "soccer" and in most of the rest of the English-speaking world as "association football."

What we call soccer was the origin of all games now known as football. First it evolved into rugby, although the new sport grew alongside the original game. That's also what happened when rugby evolved into the Canadian and American brands of football. Gaelic and Australian football, I think, took elements from both soccer and rugby.

There are also many other variations and/or combinations of soccer, rugby and football played around the world. When Australian and Irish teams play each other, for instance, they do so under "international" rules agreed upon by both of their national federations. There's also something called "universal" football, a combination of Australian football and rugby, and "Austus," a mixture of Australian and American football.
