The sub context of all of Mattea's chatter is covering herself both ways. If she gets the answer or bet amount wrong, she has initiated a "cover", like, "Yes, I knew I was wrong there, so actually I'm really right". She is young and somewhat lacking in confidence, and while there's nothing wrong with being that, it can also be annoying. And the hand gestures. And the low hanging fruit. And Ken Jennings fawning.

Hadn’t looked at it in that light before, but yes, this is it.

The guy last night in the middle was hamming it up with his reactions when he missed or couldn't come up with the question.

I noticed that, too. I thought HE was annoying.

I'm a little surprised I haven't seen more about Mattea's $1 wager. That was a killer move. Conceivably, they would've both been back with a tie, right? Though I understand not wanting to jeopardize playing a threat like that again.

Still, that made for a fun episode

Say what you want about hand gestures and quirky behavior … that’s two straight nights Mattea had to have the Final Jeopardy answer, and she came through. Both times on tough questions IMHO.

She’s good. Will be interesting to see her matched up against some of the other long-run winners in the Tournament of Champions.

After the guy who made strategic bets to make sure he at least tied and played on, the show changed the rules. If two players tie, there is a single answer played and only the winner of that answer moves on.

Yeah, for someone who had the champ on the ropes, you have to at least take a guess. And “Citizen Kane” is a pretty good guess for a 20th Century Films category.

That’s at least a handful of wins for Mattea when she had to get Final Jeopardy correct and she did. Hand gestures or not, she’s a good player.
