Letting the wife come first is always a good idea.

I applaud the Hermster for finally coming clean...

...as viewers of the Rachel Maddow Show know, the "poet" Cain quotes often on the campaign trail is actually Pokemon. Today, he admitted it:

Yeah, I pretty much thought he was a non-starter as a candidate when he said he wasn't going to be able to name the president of "Uze-becky-becky-becky-stan."

Pro tip: Don't give another woman money without your wife's knowledge and approval if you want to one day run for POTUS. Or avoid a major shitstorm at home.

The woman has two kids -- what are their ages? If they had a 13-year affair and he regularly gives her money, isn't there a pretty good chance those are his kids?

Yeah, that was a major relevation to his wife.

(Can't believe no one picked up on that mispronunciation.)

If you have to suspend your presidential candidacy because women accuse you of being a lech, blame yourself!

    So, total hypothetical, but...

We've discussed what politicians could survive scandals, and which couldn't. The two big points seem to be whether the candidate is perceived as a family man and/or how stridently the wife supports him.

So, if it ever came out that Obama were having an affair, could he survive it? I mean, he is perceived as a family man (rightfully so, I think). He speaks glowingly of his wife, and has two beautiful young girls.

A credible claim would be a disaster, right? (Not saying it's even a possibility, btw.)

And, to be bi-partisan, what about Romney.

The conventional wisdom is that is wife is the only girl he's ever kissed. If it came out that he had a 13-year affair, I think he'd be toast too.

In this day it's tough to see how anyone could survive it just because of the way things have evolved into a game of gotcha and "what about HIM?!?!" and again we pause to reflect how different this country would be if this had been the litmus test throughout history.

But I do think there is something to the fact that if someone hadn't run as a member of the moral majority, he gets some leeway. By the time Schwarzenegger got elected it was pretty clear he was nailing everything that moved on his movie sets.

Yeah, he's a good example of a guy who survived.

Everyone pretty much figured it was true, but no one really gave a shit. They weren't voting for him because he was a family man.

And, as a Hollywood celebrity, the rules were different for him anyway.

David Vitter laughs. But then again, moral scandals rarely bring down a politician in Louisiana, usually it requires a federal indictment.

Working through writing the news for this evening.

    Will avoid:

"...will no longer ride the Cain Train."
"...the candidate says he plans to come from behind to win Iowa."
"...pull out of the presidential race."
"...he has been in and out of the race all weekend."
"...this is not a position he prefers his campaign be in."
