After Clinton I think America realized that a man's private life had nothing to do with his political abilities. In 2011 I don't think Cain will have a problem with his indiscretions.

Cain has a bigger problem with his own party where many seem to want to see him fail.

I recall Hillary and Bill going on 20/20 or Dateline or something along those lines and nipping the Gennifer Flowers scandal. I was thinking about Paula Jones, which was a sexual harassment accusation whereas Flowers was just adultery, right?

I also think Clinton had some political credibility already as a sitting governor and a career politician. As much as people claim to distrust career politicians, I think that Clinton had accumulated some currency to get past something like this that Cain had not. I feel like, without a political background, Cain's margin for error might be a lot smaller.

One problem with Cain was this was just as people had warmed up to him. He was trying to get over the hump of being considered a viable candidate, to convince people that he had staying power. This might make him look like another flawed Flavor of the Week like Bachmann and Perry. It's not necessarily his fault, but a story like this breaking when it does just feeds into the narrative that has been imposed on the GOP race in general. People are likely to see it through that prism.

His paramours will probably be able to speak more intelligently about his "staying power"

I guess it's the state of things but I figured it was only a matter of time before the Cain whispers would start coming out.

With politics today it's not a matter of if but when.

Shocking that Obama has never run into a serious sex scandal. W., either.

At this point, you have to figure both are pretty well-behaved, where that's concerned. W. had the DUI and Obama had the drug admission. Seems like substance abuse is something that voters are willing to forgive if it occurs early in life and isn't shown to be a pattern.

Clinton was sitting there with Hillary and was brilliantly vague about it where the implication was there, "Well, if it's not an issue with my wife, why should it be anything that you worry about?"

Not saying I agree or disagree, but I think people would forgive a candidate for cheating on their spouse before they forgive someone for sexual harrassment.

Oh, yeah. Sexual harassment - abuse of power, essentially - is a whole new ballgame. At that point, it's more than a personal matter.

Couldn't Clinton's go round with the Portly Pepper Pot be construed as sexual harassment. He really had a twofer in that one.

There was a woman linked to W. I think it was before he got married, but allegedly he broke up this woman's marriage and she may have had an abortion. I remember the rumor was out there before the 2000 election, but nobody ever followed through on it, probably because he wasn't married at the time.

I would think if there was anything out there on Obama, Hillary's people would have found it, but her campaign was so inept that maybe they failed to look, or knowing her husband's history, didn't want to go there. McCain had his own issues, so I doubt it's an issue he would have brought up as well...
