Back to taking penalties on purpose in a shorthanded situation in the final 2 minutes of OT:

OK, I'm waaaay to interested in this subject, so I checked the NHL rulebook. The situation you reference appears to fall under Rule 74-4.

I don't see anything, though, about taking a normal on-ice minor penalty (hook, hold, trip, etc.).

I would assume that's the way they would interpret it: insufficient time to penalize a team for an infraction that would reduce them in manpower = penalty shot.
    Just a guess though

That makes total sense. I'm just not seeing that ANYWHERE in the rulebook.

  4. About the OT.

When a team is already down a man in overtime and takes a second penalty, the power-play unit would get a 5th skater. When the first penalty would expire and play is still going on, the skater can come out of the penalty box to make it a 5-on-4.

Teams do not get an automatic penalty-shot other than the old rule posted earlier and the common infractions like a goalie throwing his stick or a player being hauled down. If a player is hauled down or a stick thrown with an open net, shooter is awarded a goal.

That was from last year but I can't remember who did it and for what? Chelios is pretty cool in it

Two very different stories atop the Pittsburgh papers this morning, where I am for tonight's HNIC broadcast:

    In the Tribune: http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/s_489487.html

It features this quote from casino-licence winner Don Barden about the Penguins: "They're happy with me," Barden said. "They love me."

    Then, in the Post-Gazette: http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/07020/755371-61.stm

The highlight is this sentence: "According to sources, team representatives, including co-owner Ron Burkle, were stunned when state and local officials proposed that the Penguins share development rights and parking revenues with Mr. Barden, who was a surprise visitor to the negotiations."

Our pre-game feature tonight is on Kansas City where I spent Wednesday night and Thursday. At that time, even people supporting that city believed Pittsburgh would keep the Penguins. Inside the NHL, there was a similar feeling. Tim Leiweke, president of the company that owns KC's Sprint Center, basically admitted during our interview with him that if Nashville can't fix its problems -- and that's 50-50 at best -- the Predators might be the perfect fit (because the assumption was that the Penguins are out). This all could be some kind of negotiating ploy, but things suddenly seem bad in Penguin-land.

Plus, Tower Diner is closed today. What a disaster.

The roller-coaster ride continues. I still think they stay, but I'm beginning to waver.

  11. Sawyer was not happy with Rendell trying to say Barden deserved some of the parking and development revenues. The fact Rendell opened his fat mouth and started the public negotiations, you can bet the Penguins will begin to leak more and more like the Barden fiasco.

Burkle can ruin Rendell, Onorato and Ravenstahl by just saying those magic words to his accountant. Election campaign losses for Onorato and Ravenstahl would severely hurt Rendell's already weak standing in Western PA and Allegheny County. There's no way Rendell would dare to put his political future on the line for Pittsburgh and Penguins.

The arena deal will get done and Don Barden's weasel attempts will get exposed, especially since he was in bed with DeWeese.
