Dave Anderson wrote a great piece on Messier in Tuesday's Times. Anderson suggests that if Glen Sather steps down/is fired as Rangers GM, Messier could become the next GM.

It's on the Times' website, one of their TimesSelect stories.

    Mr Goon,

You could have added that Osgood won Stanley Cup as the primary goaltender and was back-up in another Stanley Cup run after being second-team all-star during the reg season.

    A small but useful point.

Osgood is a little snot while Lalime is a prince of a guy. If you're going to lose--and St Louis with anything less than Luongo/Theodore in net--I'd rather lose with Lalime than some guy stinking up the room with attitude and farts. And Lalime is still better than Roman Turek.

Theory: If you want to project when a goaltender is going to have an off-season, look to see if his wife has recently given birth. Felix Potvin alternated good and bad seasons depending on diaper change schedule. Lalime went all to hell in Ottawa when the same happen. Damian Rhodes? Different case. Went all to hell when wife left him for another woman.

Caps were in town last night and saw Ovechkin for the first time. Two fabulous goals, one that turned Ken Klee (the 2005 version of Larry Murphy) into a beer league defenseman.

All I can say is "Wow".

If I lived in Washington, it'd be worth having season tickets just to see this kid perform.

If the Blues had kept Curtis Sanford in training camp and jettisoned Reinhard Divis, they'd be getting better goaltending already.

Good man, JJ, stickin' up for a boy from the Sound. He was a damn good goalie in the O.

He's been damn good at every level, including the NHL, and he's got some pretty stellar numbers in the AHL this year -- 1.84 GAA, .929 save percentage and two shutouts in only six games.

thats a good story, miler. the former mrs. rhodes was very attractive in a natural non-carolina panthers cheerleader type of way.

    hockeybeat,

messier did his first major post-retirement interview on hockey night in canada during the first broadcast of the season. he said glen sather offered him the coaching job prior to giving it to bryan trottier (in 2002, i guess). messier said he wasnt ready then, but admitted he's intrigued by that position.

problem is, he's got two young children right now -- one is two, the other about three months -- and i think hes pretty devoted to them right now.

The Devils are in some real trouble.

They're doomed until Brodeur gets back. Apparently Mogilny isn't exactly playing his heart out.

Marty hasn't been Marty-esque. Who would have figured that he'd struggle after losing his top two defensemen? ::) :D ;D

Last night, the sorry, no-account, lazy, gutless Islanders layed a 4-1 beating on NJ Turnpike Exit 16W's team. And it wasn't that close.

    Brodeur will bounce back.
I'm not a huge Devils fan but I think Brodeur is still the best--or at least second best afer Hasek--goalie in the league. Third may be Luongo.

Way down the list is that fuckin' hot dog Di Pietro. Someone should run that guy into the end seats.

And only Milbury would draft a goalie because of the way he handles the puck. Not stop, but handle.

Milbury drafted DiPetro because he traded Luongo to Florida for a bag of pucks and broken sticks.
