Re: New NHL vs. the old NHL

    Sirs, Madames,

Ovechkin and Crosby went No. 1 in consecutive drafts--that said, they're as far apart in age as could be. Ovechkin is a late 85--he missed being eligible for the 2003 draft by only a few days. If Trina had foaled Sidney five weeks beyond his 8/7/87 birthdate, he'd still be in junior this year, eligible for the 2006 draft. Ovechkin is a month shy of being two years older than Crosby. A big difference at that age.

Bob McCown has never been to a hockey rink. And he doesn't know anybody in the hockey business--it's his producer's Rolodex he depends on. There isn't one scout in hockey who'll even off the record--even if he works for the Caps--who would take AO over 87. Fact.

'Course, some wizard will soon pipe up about Robbie Schremp or Corey Locke next.

    YHS, etc

I won't pipe up about Locke but Schremp - while not in the league of Ovechkin and Crosby - should not be playing in the OHL right now.

    Mr Huggy,

Nobody likes Schremp's skating for the next level tho'. Good enough with the puck to be a pretty dominant jr, but is he Mike Ribeiro? He'll play, I guess. You burn a first-rounder, you'll reach to get him into your line-up. But less of a pro than 87, AO, Perry, and the one nobody talks about much, Mike Richards, who might be the one who gives you the best chance to win in the playoffs. Looks like a stickboy (non-athlete) and does a mean B Clarke impersonation.

like richards a lot. but boy did he get his ass kicked by arron asham last night. at least clarke left the fighting to schultz, kelly, bridgman, dupont, etc.

Richards was a pretty fair fighter in junior when he decided to drop 'em but that's a long way from scrapping in The Show.

    Mr Dad,

Even if he loses a fight, Richards gets marks for attendance.

Funny thing, he's a bad-body/no-body player--go find a muscle. Does he get better as a pro with gym work? If so, look out. Anyone who talked trade with Philly had him on their list (way ahead of Carter).

I wonder how much of that was due to Richards' being a product of a very stable organization, and Carter's being a product of a coaching carousel during the same era.

Getting back to Bob McCown just for a minute, does anybody know why he wears shades in the studio? I've noticed this on the broadcasts which are simulcast on Sportsnet and I've wondered – does he have a problem with light like Richard Petty does or is he just too cool to let anybody see his eyes?

His ego's so big he's gotta wear shades.

Anyone know why the Devils-Caps game was played this early? I'm guessing because of Veterans Day and most government offices are closed, which would allow people in DC to go to a game during the day.

McCown says it's because his eyes are sensitive to the studio lights--understandable, I guess.

But I'll go with Huggy's explanation.
