Turns out going with Gerber is looking real good so far. He was the Canes' main goalie most of the season and, keep in mind that he was recovering from being sick when the Habs beat him up in the first two games of the first-round series.

Twenty years after winning his first Stanley Cup, Patrick Roy has added a Memorial Cup to his huge resume.

He's now the co-owner, GM and head coach of the Quebec Remparts, who have just won the Canadian major junior championship with a 6-2 victory over the tournament host Moncton Wildcats. It was Quebec's second win over Moncton in the tournament after losing the Quebec league final 4-2 to the Wildcats.

Nashville prospect Alexander Radulov, who led the Quebec league and the country in scoring this season (61 goals and 152 points in 62 games) and had already been named MVP of that league and the entire Canadian Hockey League, scored five points in today's final and was also named the tournament MVP. He is scary talented, watch for him with the Preds next season.

Peter Chiarelli met the Boston media yesterday, and the Gold And Black was fucked by Ottawa and the League. http://www.boston.com/sports/hockey/bruins/articles/2006/06/01/bear_necessities/

Some highlights:

Chiarelli's tenure will begin 15 days after the start of free agency, not necessarily July 15. The beginning of the period will be set once the salary-cap ceiling and floor have been established. He will not be allowed to get involved in the Bruins' buyouts, qualifying offers, or deal with Ottawa's restricted or unrestricted free agents. The league will monitor his involvement in the free-agent period with concern to players other than Ottawa's. If both clubs are vying for the same UFA while he's still working for Ottawa, Chiarelli said he'd handle it. ``I've dealt with conflict before, it will be difficult, there's no question," he said. ``It'll work out."

Interim GM Jeff Gorton will remain as assistant GM.

``I've known Jeff for a while," Chiarelli said. ``We see each other at the rinks. I like Jeff a lot and I look forward to working with him."

Gorton, who was in Toronto at the NHL prospects combine, will run the draft for Boston as he did under former GM Mike O'Connell.

The reason the Bruins are in this awkward position, having Chiarelli stay on for weeks in Ottawa and losing a conditional draft pick next year as compensation, was that they didn't put anything in writing when they asked the Senators' permission to interview Chiarelli. The Senators also didn't put it in writing that they expected compensation, leaving commissioner Gary Bettman to sort it out. Sinden said that has never been the practice but it is in the bylaws, which they will follow to the letter from now on.

Chiarelli expects coach Mike Sullivan's fate to be decided prior to the NHL draft June 24.

``I don't know Mike," Chiarelli said. ``I've heard a lot of good things about him. The coaching situation has to be addressed very quickly."

All in all, it seemed to be a day in which the Bruins expressed disappointment at what has gone on the last decade and what they can do to change it. After a period of self-evaluation, they believe they have the proper plan to reach the success that has been lacking.

``We want to create a culture where players want to come here to play and fans want to watch exciting hockey in one of the best arenas in the world," said the senior Jacobs. ``I found Peter to have the strategic approach to hockey operations, a deep appreciation for the way the game is played, a solid reputation as one of hockey's top emerging leaders, and a passion and energy toward building a strong, transparent team. We think he will bring a new dimension to the Boston Bruins."

Jacobs said he has heard that players don't want to come to Boston for a variety of reasons and said he believes that can be rectified in short order.

``Historically, it was them against us for years when we did not have a cap environment," Jacobs said. ``We have a cap environment now and everyone is dealing with the same dollars. We just have to be an attractive place to come. If it's the touch and feel, and the way we operate, we have to change that so people want to come here, because it's not because of the city. We just have to do that little bit more. We've got to listen.

``I want to introduce a new, fresh culture to this organization," Chiarelli said. ``I want players to want to play here. I want players to want to stay here. I want players to move their families here. I want them to be proud, I want them to be proud to have the Boston Bruins logo on their chest. In my experience as an agent, I got to know the concerns of players. My experience in management, your main objective is to win. Sometimes you lose sight of these other things the players are thinking. I think because I've experienced both I will be able to draw them both together and unite a common, strong bond toward a winning tradition.

``Picking the right players, that's my job," Chiarelli said. ``I want players who can skate, players with energy. I want players who can close gaps, win pucks. I want a real true combination of speed and character. I've been lucky in my time with Ottawa to be under the tutelage of general manager John Muckler. He was part of five Stanley Cups with the Edmonton Oilers. That's all about speed and character. I'm going to bring that plan to the Boston Bruins. I like an uptempo game. I like skating, I like transition, I like puck movement. That's part of the theme I'm going to instill in this organization. One of my strengths is communication. I want players to know what we're thinking. I want prospects to know how they're developing. I want them to hear it from us firsthand and I want it to be current."

The NHL's train wreck, aka the Toronto Maple Leafs, have fired their director of amateur scouting and don't plan to hire a replacement until after the June 24 entry draft.

What a great idea. Why would you want someone running your amateur scouting department before the amateur draft takes place?
