So we're sitting in the dressing room last night before our game, and our captain, a huge Rangers fan, is talking about Sanguinetti like he's the second coming of Brian Leetch. Our new center -- who's playing for Northeastern U. in the fall and also is from Jersey -- is unimpressed.

"I don't know where all this is coming from," New Guy tells the captain. "I played against the guy and he was just an average player."

"Oh man," the crestfallen captain says. "Don't tell me that."

Good times for a Devils fan.

If your new center is going to Northeastern, that likely means he hasn't played against Sanguinetti in at least two years. In 2006, Sanguinetti is not an average player.

That may be the case, my guy said he was out all last year with a shoulder injury.

It might be a bit much to say Sanguinetti is the next Brian Leetch, but he is for real. He plays in my hometown and I've seen him many times. He's a great skater and puck handler and has also worked really hard on his fitness, which was markedly improved this past season.

He was fourth in team scoring in 2005-06 with 14 goals and 65 points in 68 games. He played every regular season game and was the club's top-scoring defenceman. He also finished fourth in the league in scoring among defencemen and played in the all-star game.

In the playoffs, he led the team in scoring and was second in the league among defencemen with five goals and 15 points in 11 games. Again, he played every game. The only defenceman in the league to outscore him in the post-season had 18 points in 19 games.

Here's a neat story about a college hockey team from Windsor, Ontario that didn't have a league to play in but wanted to still play competitively.

So the St. Clair Saints have joined Major League Hockey, the top Senior AAA league in the province. It's supposed to be "amateur" hockey but is far from it, as the teams in this league have annual budgets of $150,000 and up. The Saints are true amateurs -- the players are the team's only financial source -- but they're going to give it a go.

Clearly, Gary Bettman doesn't learn from his mistakes:

What the fuck? Puerto Rico? What's next, a tour of Central America followed by Southeast Asia?

Does this mean Bud Selig will be arranging for Grapefruit League games in Yellowknife next year?

    Mr Mouth,

    Re Sags.

It was a down year for D in the draft. Mr J saw Sags more than I did, so you have to respect the first hand. What I can tell you is that the scouts I've talked to have BS as a Top 4 defenceman but not an All-Star in time, which isn't Leetch by any stretch. He was a good jr last year but a Leetch type player would be a dominant one. I don't think of him as a real physical package. One thing to note: He had the best vertical jump/standing long jump marks at the combine among defenceman (same among some other more arcane physical tests to do with explosive leg strength). Which would suggest that he'll have no problem on first step quickness.

Though I can't tell you how I did sit in on his interview with a club at the combine. He's a very personable kid. He'll figure out what it takes to be a player.

    YHS, etc

What are the possibilities that the ice will be better in PR than in Tampa Bay?

This is fucking retarded. If they go anywhere with exhibition games, they should eb going over to Europe, like Stokholm or London or even Russia (fuck throw them a bone for finally signing a transfer agreement deal)
