On a personal note, covered the first practice of the season on my beat yesterday.

Hockey is finally back! ;D (for me anyways)

    Mr Choice,

Forget about what they're being "payed."

Your exercise in speculative fiction--that being the complete and utter demise of the NHL--is original only because it is at once far-fetched and pointless. The NHL won't compete directly with the NFL or MLB but that doesn't mean that it won't stay in business. Some franchises will lose money but some are guaranteed profitability.

My pt was this and not to be didactic: As the NHL grew--and as television access to the NHL became a 24/7 deal in Canada--it sucked the talent, interest and life out of a country-wide level of the game. Much like media expansion caused the shrinking of minor-league baseball (the death of Class D, etc).

    YHS, etc

Malkin signed a three year deal today.

Can the presence of Malkin and Crosby guarantee that the Pens stay in Pittsburgh for the foreseeable future?

The only thing that would totally ensure that is if the Penguins and their gaming partner are given a slots liscense. I think the Pa. gaming board is set to give them in 2035.

The odds on this happening are currently being calculated by Rick Tocchet.
