LeClair said he fell in a rut in the ice during the intermission.

Pens radio: "Team will have an update after the game." Not sure what to make of that.

The Johnson-for-Staal rumor sure has legs. Sucker's been going strong now for what? Four months?

The Pens would have to be crazy not to make that deal. They're set for the next 15 years with Malkin and Crosby. It's time to start adding some young talent to that blueline.

From everything I've read and heard from the Pens' side, they never turned it down. It was Carolina asking for a lot more than just Staal. Don't recall the specifics, but I do remember thinking the asking price wasn't outlandish. I'll try and dig some stuff up, but it could take awhile. I'm at work and somewhat distracted (understatement of the year) by the Malkin situation.

Last seemingly plausible offer I saw discussed was Whitney, Malone and the Pens' No. 1 (Staal) for Johnson. Discussion centered around the fact that the Canes wanted a "talented D-man" back in any deal. That seemingly all but rules out Pittsburgh as a destination.

    Keep on waiting, sez TSN:

Penguins general manager Ray Shero said Malkin will be re-evaluated Thursday in Pittsburgh, but could not be more specific on his injury.

"At this point anything else would be speculation," said Shero. "We'll see how he feels tomorrow, frankly I was happy he got up considering the way he went down."

If that deal goes down, Ray Shero will have a pretty short career.

Just when I thought Jim Rutherford was really getting it.

Patience, Jim. For chrissakes, the guy's honoring a commitment. Let him do so ... he might get better in the process.

That was back when Malone looked expendable. He was pretty awful for a good part of last season, IIRC. Whitney, though, is pretty much the Pens only decent D-man. There was also talk about Welch, but it doesn't sound like he's going anywhere.

    Sirs, Madames,

Staal III was supposedly far from impressive at Canadian under-20 camp. Factor in disappearance at Mem Cup. Maybe he was a little over-priced at No. 2 (say one slot if Toews's nut isn't mush or two if Backstrom is as real as he looked at worlds).

If the Pens get Johnson, it'll be like SE Hinton novel on Ice.

    YHS, etc
