His goal was a thing of beauty as well.

An 18 year old kid is turning 30 year old NHL defensemen into pylons.

One is a hardcover of 220 pages.

Another is a softcover of 120 pages in a children's picture-book format

The third, I dunno, I haven't seen (and believe me, I looked) it but it was written by a schoolteacher for an almost invisible publishing company ... who knows?

His goal was pretty friggin' sweet, too, against the Caps.

And what made those highlights really great was the fact that they happened during an actual game with actual players on the ice, instead of in a skills competition at the end of overtime.

November 24, 2005 -- ATLANTA — With a win here tonight against the Thrashers, the Rangers go to 15-7-3, or eight games over NHL .500 for the first time since the team was 22-14-3-2 after a victory in Los Angeles on Dec. 29, 2001.
That was one night after Eric Lindros sustained a season-turning concussion in San Jose and two nights before Theo Fleury began a descent to the nether regions of his soul in Phoenix that coincided with an 0-7-1-1 streak that signaled the beginning of the end — or, perhaps more accurately, the end of the beginning — for Ron Low's squad.

Tom Renney's stable team is unlikely to face such a happenstance. But there still will be signposts ahead. There always are. One is approaching with Martin Rucinsky's likely return in another week or so from the knee injury that's sidelined the winger since Oct. 31. Plus, with the trade market starting to stir, there are decisions to be made that will reflect what the front office believes this team can accomplish.

First things first: When Rucinsky returns, the Rangers will have to bump a winger from the lineup. If Rucinsky is reinserted on Steve Rucchin's left, then either Ville Niemenen moves to the right with Marcel Hossa the casualty, or Niemenen stands in (at least at times) for Petr Prucha on the Blair Betts line. Though it wouldn't hurt Prucha to sit here and there, it may hurt the Rangers not to have their closer available for the shootout.

Second things next: If management believes it realistically can reach for the moon this unconventional season, then there's an obligation to investigate what it would take to get right winger Petr Sykora out of Anaheim. Sykora is 29, he's a gunner big time, and, oh, did we forget to mention he's a Czech? He's also in the final year of a contract under which he's earning $3.116 million, or, under applicable cap calculations, just under $17,000 a day. So at this point, 50 days into the season, there's about $2.27M remaining on the deal.

The Rangers are believed to have about $4M of cap space available — the NHL continues to withhold vital cap-related information from the press and public — which means that getting Sykora would reduce other possibilities until the trade deadline that's set at 40 days before the end of the season. But Sykora is a substantial upgrade over Hossa, and his acquisition would give the Rangers a legitimate second scoring line, with Rucinsky on the left, and another threat on the power play and in the shootout.

This, too: It would change the look of a team that somehow finds ways to win despite a paucity of weapons beneath Jagr. Here are the questions: Is that necessary; can this team continue; how far can it go on mirrors, smoke and hard work; and is change a good thing?

Oh, and while we're on the subject of cap space for trades, if the Bruins continue to flounder (ah, you know where we're going with this) and are dead in the water as the deadline nears, then the Rangers must, simply must, have enough in the bank and Glen Sather must have enough gumption to get whatever is left of the $4M being earned this season by Brian Leetch.

Jagr helps Rangers get fourth straight win

ATLANTA (AP) - Jaromir Jagr broke a tie late in the second period with his NHL-leading 21st goal and the New York Rangers went on to their fourth straight win, beating the Atlanta Thrashers 6-3 Thursday night.

After the Thrashers scored twice to overcome a 3-1 deficit, Jagr swooped in off the right wing and snapped a high shot from between the circles that eluded the blocker of Atlanta goalie Michael Garnett with 2:02 left in the second.
Blair Betts made it 5-3 with 11:51 remaining, slipping behind defenseman Niclas Havelid and deflecting a pass from Marcel Hossa past Garnett. Jed Ortmeyer added an open-net goal in the final minute to send the Thrashers to their third straight loss.

New York's victory was marred by an injury to goalie Kevin Weekes, who went down awkwardly early in the third period and appeared to hurt his right leg. He remained on the ice for several minutes before heading to the locker room, holding up his leg the entire way.

The extent of the injury wasn't immediately known. Henrik Lundqvist took over and blanked Atlanta over the final 17:58.

Marian Hossa, brother of Marcel, put the Thrashers ahead just 6:38 into the game with his 10th goal, but the lead didn't stand up.

Jason Ward tied it before the period was over and the Rangers knocked out starting Atlanta goalie Steve Shields with two more goals early in the second, both off rebounds. Petr Prucha scored his fourth goal 59 seconds into the period, then Shields gave up a horrible goal to Michael Nylander.

Ward got a long shot on goal and Shields guided the rebound right in front of the net to Nylander, who knocked it into the open net at 2:11. Thrashers coach Bob Hartley had seen enough of Shields, replacing him with Garnett.

Atlanta tied the game on goals by Marc Savard and Slava Kozlov, the latter with 3:21 left in the period. But Jagr scored just over a minute later to put the Rangers ahead for good.

Jagr came into the night tied with Philadelphia's Simon Gagne for the NHL's goal-scoring lead.

Notes:
The Thrashers assigned goalie Jani Hurme to Chicago of the American Hockey League, where he will play for the first time since the 2002-03 season. Hurme struggled with post-surgery complications after a back operation and failed a physical before training camp. He was acquired from Carolina on Oct. 3, 2003, but has yet to play for the Thrashers. ... Marcel Hossa wears No. 81, the opposite of his older brother's No. 18.

I'm not sure that it's the best idea to make trades if you're the Rangers. The organization has hit on something that works. Why break it up now?
