For the most part, you're right. But consider that the Wings are without their No. 1 center (Robert Lang), two top four defenseman (Jiri Fischer and Niklas Kronwall) and their No. 1 goalie (Manny Legace).

Still, they should have been able to find a way to beat the Islanders.

Bobby Orr also played without a helmet...

A Peca type of player is getting phased out of the new NHL, simply because center (or is it centre?)-ice muggings are no longer allowed.

Well, it's not like the Rangers haven't had a past history with Nedved. I mean, he only had two stints with the Blueshirts...

    Quick trivia question:

Until Saturday night, there were two teams that haven't had a game decided by a shootout. Philadelphia lost to Nashville, leaving just one team.

Who is the one team that hasn't had a shootout yet?

The Islanders, who are too busy losing in regulation.

If it doesn't involve 21, IJAG, leather ass-less chaps, a chimp, apple pie, pledge wood cleaner and old Roseanne reruns, I don't want it.

    beef,

i dont know if you saw after hours on saturday, but peca was the guest and he was excellent.he talked about how he met with mactavish and it was decided to take him away from the offensive role and move him down with either pisani-moreau or harvey-laraque. since then, hes been much, much better.

it's obvious watching him but his body language is much better and so is his play.

peca's biggest problem is that mike milbury gave him that contract. darcy regier refused to do it -- and ripped apart the sabres in the process -- but hindsight clearly shows it to be the correct decision. because peca has such a big ticket, people look at his stats and scream. but his value is not scoring. it's his ability to grind, to make life difficult for the opposition. and it's clear that hes beginning to find his way in the new nhl.

he was terrific last week against the avalance, canucks and even the bruins. pisani-moreau (who i love)-peca was edmonton's best line saturday by a mile. the only sad thing for peca was watching him get caught from behind on a shorthanded breakaway early in the second. hes lost a step (he just missed in overtime before tanabe's winner). over the years, hes punished his body so badly that its cost him at the offensive end.

The announced attendance at last night's Senators-Panthers game was just over 10,000, but the Ottawa Sun said the actual crowd size was half that number at best. If the best team in the NHL can't bring more than 5,000 fans out, why do the Panthers continue to exist in that location?

Here are some notes from Sun columnist Chris Stevenson:

Last night's crowd was announced as 10,883. There looked to be only about half that in the building. Then again, this is a state where they have problems counting ...

One of the between-period promotions here has people trying to chip velcro golf balls onto a green at centre ice. No worry about wayward shots last night. You could have hit a bucket of balls into the stands and not hit anybody ...

Could it be any quieter here between periods here? Some people in the lower bowl shot me an annoying glance in the first intermission for typing too loudly up here in the pressbox .. .Hey, maybe they forgot to tell people this game had been rescheduled?

I went out Sunday night looking to maybe catch the highlights of the night's NHL games. Silly me. I watched ESPN's SportsCenter in a bar. I had a big beer and then a little beer and still no hockey. I saw lotsa NFL, rodeo and women's basketball, but no hockey ... unless it came on during a brief bathroom break ... Maybe you can't see NHL highlights easily here, but you can get to a Panthers game cheap. At least three area golf courses offer free tickets to Panthers games with a round of golf.

And in a similar vein, Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment have just purchased Glen Abbey and are now requiring Leafs and Raptors season ticketholders to purchase memberships.
