Why pay for an extra set of tires? Prize money between 30th and 43rd ain't that much different, so even if he stayed out there, it wouldn't do him much good.

He's a field filler. He eeks out a living showing up with minimal crew, keeping his expenses low and not wrecking. He's not the first guy to do it, nor will he be the last.

But to just quit a race for no reason doesn't seem very sporting and seems kind of fraudulent. I just don't know what kind of message it sends.

That's one story I'd love to write (or read), the inside scoop on field-fillers. But good luck getting anyone important on the record.

Shepherd, just one example, is a joke. If you just started following racing and didn't know better you'd think his name was "Morgan Shepherd - Handling."

That son of a gun cut me off in aisle two at Food Lion the other day.

Why don't they just cut the field and hand out the extra cash to the drivers that actually compete?

NASCAR denies it, but there have been reports that 43 is mandated per the TV contracts.

Personally, I wish they went back to 36 at Bristol and Martinsville, like they did in the old days.

They could cut the field to 20 and nobody would notice the difference. The bottom 23 are the Star Trek guys in the red shirts.

I don't care what they do for the most part, but I sure wish there were fewer night races!

If she'd waited another week, Kasey Kahne would have been available. :D
