Same reason they did to Dale last year.

However, shouldn't the onus be on ESPN for not running a delay?

I did not know that NASCAR penalized Earnhardt Jr. last year.

After a win in Talladega, a talking head asked Junior what it meant to win there.

He answered, "It don't mean sh_t. Daddy did it 10 times."

Junior received the same punishment Smoke did for his b.s. last week at Indy. Silly and stupid, but at least NASCAR was consistent.

Expect NASCAR to throw the book at Robby Gordon since it can make an example out of him without destroying their headline acts.

Not last year. It was in 2004 at Talladega.

And that makes it ok for Ambrose to run him over? I still don't get why NASCAR wanted him in thirteenth when he should have started in the top two or three no matter what scoring loop is used (the ridiculousness of these "loops" is another subject. Why not just freeze the field when the flag comes out rather than roll back to positions seconds or more before, especially on road courses.) I think Robby was right to try and maintain his position, and the Helton regime will punish him mercilessly for disobeying their rules.

Not saying he shouldn't be punished, but the sanctions always seemed to be harsher when the number 7 is on the receiving end.

Unless Gordon was being penalized the equivalent of a stop-and-go for passing under the yellow flag in a bad spot on the track to try and pass, and doing so in a rough manner.

Ambrose may still get punished for spinning out the 55 after the field was frozen.

But Gordon was out front of the 59 when the caution flew. I think that this issue all boils down to the distance between the scoring loops.

Doubtful, but we'll never be certain. Be brutally honest: You don't know that Gordon was leading at the exact moment the caution flew because ESPN was showing the big wreck when the field was frozen.

Based on when ESPN's little jellybean turns from green to yellow and Gordon's position when they finally cut back to the lead group two seconds later (he had failed to complete the pass at that point), I suspect Ambrose still had the lead by half a car length when NASCAR froze the field.

    Again, we'll never be certain.

Now that ESPN/ABC has the Cup races we get Rusty's commentary every Sunday. I swear he has said "I tell you what" at least 50 times. Someone has got to coach him on that. Enough is enough - time to go to mute and throw on MRN radio.
